- Q & A
Great if you need that extra toe room!
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I have always had a really hard time finding hiking boots that fit. My feet are shaped a little odd - my big toe slants in towards my little toe, causing my toes to crunch together and a bunion-like bone on the side of my foot to protrude. While still having a narrow heel and ankle, I need a lot of room in the toe box. I have given up on hiking boots, never being able to find something that doesn't crunch my toes up and cut off my circulation. I switched to trail running shoes instead, which have been great except for when I want to go on winter hikes in the snow. These are perfect for winter, and actually fit my feet with their extra room in the toe box and on the side to accommodate bunions. I took them on a couple snowy/muddy hikes and they were great. The Goretex membrane kept my feet nice and dry, and the gripping on the soles really held up in the slippery snow and wet mud. These are a perfect winter hiking/backpacking boot that fits with a wider toe box and a narrow heel. Would definitely recommend!
NOT Bunion Friendly!
The following is the firsthand experience of my wife who these boots were purchased for. This boot has a narrow toe box. It does not have a nice wide, rounded toe box. I had high hopes for these boots because I have bunions on both feet making finding comfortable fitting boots a challenge. These are supposed to be wider in the toe area therefore accommodating bunions. That’s a joke. It might be a 1/16 inch wider in the bunion area. It is deeper across the big toe with a rounder ‘lump’ in the leather there so if you have a bunion high up on the top side of your foot these might work if it is small. However, my bunions, and most I have seen, are on the side of the foot at the big toe or, alternatively, at the side of the little toe, not on top of the foot. If you need a wide, roomy toe box for bunions this is not the boot for you. Also, this pooched up area in such an odd place makes the boot look weird as well. Major fail! Now I am stuck paying return shipping for yet another product that made a major promise but did not live up to it. Ignore the hype. You would do better to order a wide boot from another brand if bunions are an issue for you. Alas, my search continues to find a boot that comfortably accommodates my bunions. It’s like looking for a unicorn! I would give theses boots negative stars if I could!
