    Built on tradition.

By using a traditional method of boot-making, which reduces the number of seams, Hanwag has ensured that the Men's Bergler Backpacking Boot brings an ideal level of both comfort and durability to you on the trail. The aforementioned traditional construction requires very skilled, high-quality, handcrafted workmanship to double-stitch the sole to the nubuck leather upper, which means fewer seams and subsequently less rubbing and pressure points for lasting comfort in the backcountry.

The comfort is then further bolstered by the soft leather padded cuff and tongue to prevent chafing and enhance cushioning, while the flex zone on the heel along with a shock absorber eat up loose, rocky, and treacherous terrain underfoot. And if your adventure begins just after the rain's ended, rely on the ultra-grippy and stable Vibram Tessin rubber outsole to lockdown each step you take with confidence.

These are outstanding and very comfortable, very lightweight. The toe box is fairly large, I wouldn't order a wide if that is an option.
    Fit is true to size.

Hanwag knows how to make some serious boots. They start with a single piece of leather, this helps to make sure that the entire boot looks the same and has the same aesthetic appeal, also ensuring the quality is the same throughout. They also double stitch the seams. This doesn't seem like a big deal (pun intended) but it is incredibly time consuming and has to be done by hand. The result: super durable, handmade masterpieces. You can also re-sole them. Which leads me to the next area of the boot, the sole has a Vibram grip and is extremely stiff, when you walk over rocks your foot doesn't even flex, this helps to not let your foot get fatigued on longer hikes, especially when carrying heavier loads. It also ensures that each step you take you can take with confidence, which is very important if you are ever walking in precarious situations. If you are like me, you find yourself in more precarious situations than you care to admit, mine are thanks to my hiking buddy who always encourages me to go off-trail because it is "faster". These are stiff and need some time to break-in, so don't expect to buy them a week before your trek and have them feel great. Your foot and especially your ankle need to get used to these boots. I have found that not lacing the top grommet is actually more comfortable, but I'm glad it's there for when I'm carrying much heavier loads and need to be locked into the boot.

Sizing: I actually found these to fit spot on. I usually wear my hiking boots a little loose, so these are perfect, I went with my sneaker size and found that they fit exactly the same as my regular shoes. They have a good amount of toe space with the added bonus of being able to really lock in the heel.

Overall: I highly recommend these boots for anyone looking for a boot for serious backpacking adventures. For people who appreciate well made, handcrafted goods. And those who are looking for a boot that they can rely on for years and years.

    Serious Boots

I am still in the stages of breaking these in. I tried a size 11 (which is my street shoe size in vans) and I think I could have made them work but I sized to a 11.5 and I am happy. The 11's were still roomy in the toe box but I could just feel the end of the boot and I figure with foot swelling I would be in a bad spot.

The 11.5 is fairly roomy and I would surely need a hearty sock for a loooong hike. I will possibly look at insoles here to fill up a slight amount of space as my toe box is wide but the rest of my foot is fairly skinny.

Overall I am into week 2 of wearing and they are more supple but still need break in time. There are 0 hot spots and I love the feel, although the material around my ankles, when tied tight, can be uncomfortable over time as it has ripples that tend to apply slightly more pressure depending on your step... But I am sure that will break in soon.

The boot is stiff for sure, but it has a slight natural bend to it around the ball of the foot/sole area, so as you walk the foot articulates well. The eyelets are awesome and hold tight over time. The construction is clearly the highest quality boot I have owned (Well above RedWing, Danner and Thorogood.. which are some of my other favorite boots) These were made to last a lifetime for sure. The darker leather scores easily but it ads a patina that I am looking forward to.

I purchased these for a hefty trip that will involve TONS of hiking in colder weather and I feel these couldn't have been a more perfect boot.

I've been looking for some real deal working duty backpacking boots. Not save an ounce weekend warrior boots, but starts looking good at mile 300 boots. I found them. These babies are old school heavies. The softer uppers give my ankles a nice hug while the solid leather foot takes a beating and keeps on hiking. I'm in love.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These boots are hands down one of the best I have ever owned. They are fully leather lined and from the first time you put them on it's like a glove. **Please note the sizing listed is UK**. I am a US 12 and bought a UK size 11 and the fit is perfect.
The toe box is on the roomier side so if you have an average or slightly wider foot it should serve you well. Paired with a wool sock these are solid winter boots. I have trudged through knee deep snow and my feet stayed 100% dry.
The boot is burly and looks very heavy but is surprisingly light once you have it on. Paired with a flannel and Khaki's you will be ready for every mountain town around the globe. Hanwag is Fjallraven's boot brand so look there first for your next flannel and it'll be a match made in heaven!!

Does this boot have a shank? If so how big and what material? What is the shaft height on the boot?
