Perfect for the Backcountry
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
This a perfect pan for frying up the day's catch on a backpacking trip. I use it with my Snow Peak stove. It works great. Heats evenly. Fries up fish or anything else. Washes up easily. Lightweight. Great addition to the backpack.

Great addition to car camping set.
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I was looking for a pan that would do it all for my car camping set up. This one fits the bill, it cleans out easily, fits meals for up to 4 people, and doesn't take up a ton of space in my cooking box.

Perfection in a Pan
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
A good frying pan, for camping, is tough to find. Especially in this size. It is light enough to bring backpacking when cooking for large groups and great for things like car camping. The non-stick capabilities are no joke!

Perfect
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I bought the 8" and the 14". I'll probably need to get the 10" also. The 8in is perfect for 1-3 people. Compacts nicely with the fold-able handle. This is something I would consider taking on a backpacking trip. It is now a permanent resident with my camping gear. The 14" is a bahama mama! You must put the handle on with 3 bolts, it does not fold or bend, so to stash this in a container you would need to remove the handle each time. The handle is probably another 8". It's not a time killer, but it still is not as convenient as the 8". You could feed the masses with this bad boy. I'll for sure be using this at home and the once in a while camp trips when I am feeding a large group.

Exactly what I was looking for!

I purchased this to mix up our backcountry diet instead of eating dehydrated meals all the time. I ended up with the smaller of the three & it cooks everything I have ever needed. The non-stick works really well, I always bring some butter to 'oil' it up. It looks new still after a lot of use! It is worth every ounce in your pack!

Great pan!
this is light enough that I've brought this with me while backpacking, yet it's quality is till high enough that I use this at home as well! Doesn't even really need butter or oil to keep from sticking!

Great Pan!!
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I have 8 inch one. Light.. not bulky... Since handle can be folded, it doesn't take much space either. Also, without oil or butter, the surface doesn't stick with foods which I like~!!!!

Awesome

I was amazed with this pan. We forgot butter on or camping trip so had to cook the hotcakes without it :(, even without the butter they didn't stick to the pan at all:)!! The pan heated up nicely and quickly. Cleans up really easy! I often use this at home as well because I like it so much.

Excellent Nonstick
I have used this pan a few times frying up sausage or bacon for morning breakfast. The nonstick is top notch and weight is on the low side. Surprisenly, this pan is of such low weight as most nonstick pans tend to heat (or burn) quickly unless they are thick in nature. This pan does not do that. The handle folds quite conveniently inside the pan and locks solid. One potential critique, and always subject to critism, is how long the nonstick will remain. I was able to give the pan a minor scratch to the nonstick but in fairness I was using a stainless steel utensil. This does not warrant a downgrade in my rating due to using a steel utensil.

OUTSTANDING! Better than expected
2012 is the season we go light weight and start pack-in-pack-out trips. I only wanted ONE frying pan to cook meals for my son and I. Although a bit heavier than some other choices it is the "one" pan that will do the job. smaller fish fillets, chix breast, eggs & hash even 8" tortillas for wraps to skillet meals will vook great in this pan! The quality exceeds my expectation. We make a few test meals with my jetboil burner and it will be a joy to make good quality meals in the field. I fully expect to get many years of service from this pan. No "cons" at this time.

Best Camp Frying Pan I Have Owned
I love this little guy. I own 2 8"'ers. Cooks cleanly and quickly. Doesn't burn any of my food. It is a cinch to clean up, and is non-stick. Handle folds up for storage. I never go camping without them!

The 8"
I have the 8" and it is perfect for 1-2 people. I can easily cook up some bacon and egg breakfast sandwiches in the backcountry. And I mean real eggs and bacon. It distributes heat evenly and didn't burn my eggs (cooked with Optimus Crux) and is truly non-stick, washing up easily with Dr. Bronners. I recommend this as a luxury item, as it is a bit weighty and bulky.

Hello, Can this 8"frypan nest within the GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Hiker Cookware Set? - Thank you!
rj
Phil Maher
April 24, 2013
Nope. Besides everything else that comes with the Hiker and needs to nest inside, the pan's diameter is too wide. With the folding handle on the pan, the pot on the Hiker doesn't even sit on top or bottom effectively. Even though you can certainly use it with other GSI sets, it's made as more of a stand-alone piece.
rj
April 25, 2013
Hey, thanks for the quick response. I have a follow up question, if it's not too much trouble - what stand alone frypan would you recommend to fit over the top of the pot lid so that I can pack together with the cook set. Thank you!
Phil Maher
April 26, 2013
Hey rj, I've never seen it sold separately, but call GSI and ask them if they can hook you up with the 8" frying pan from their Pinnacle Base set (small). Same pot-grabber set up and diameter, so nesting shouldn't be too much of a problem. As an alternate, since the Hiker pot tapers at the bottom, you might also be able to use something from MSR and rely on the stuff sack to keep everything together. Try GSI at this #: 800-704-4474. Hope this helps you out.

It's not exactly a lid with a loop but a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil would certainly suffice. I use this set-up when frying my fresh-caught trout in the back country. It's much lighter & you don't have to clean it up when you've finished cooking.

There's a company called Open Country Campware that makes inexpensive aluminum pots and kettles that have the exact type of lid you're looking for. I'm not sure if the dimensions would work out perfectly, but they put the diameter of their 4qt non-stick kettle @ 8". Their stock # is: 4369-0085-30. Should be real close, if not right on. The whole set-up retails for under $13. I use a couple smaller ones for throwing directly on the fire, and the lids are actually pretty decent and weigh next to nothing. Good luck.
