my favorite bag so far
I have just about every bag you can imagine and the Gregory Octal 45 is my absolute favorite for so many reasons. I have now used it on 3 50+ mile hikes and it has held up incredibly well. It is the PERFECT size for 4 day backcountry if you are lightweight. I love the hip belt and pockets where they should be. The mesh in the outside is super handy for holding my tent perfectly. The brain is perfect for holding my daily needs without opening bag I love how it adjust to add extra to my top if needed. I used it on Whitney last year and the bright blue was great at trail crest, everyone had similar colored bags so my blue one was easy to find! I love this bag so much that I have talked 3 of my friends to buy the same one!

Almost perfect.
I do a lot of miles every year. My old pack was getting worn and I couldn't repair it any more. I do like the UL packs, but I don't like how most sit on my back. This pack weighs close to my other one, has a back hammock to allow for airflow and it doesn't sit right on my back, so I gave it a try: I hiked 8 days, 170 miles in Colorado 10k-12,500 elevation. Sun, rain and sleet with this pack. First impressions: I love the color, slightly stronger nylon and sizing compared to my old Marmot. It is 2 oz heaver than my old one, but the set up is similar. It is 3L's larger than my old pack. Not that I needed more space, but it is nice to have more space with only 2 oz more weight. It fits pretty well, it is fairly comfortable overall. It is a bit wider than my old one, not thrilled with that, but It is what it is. Things I didn't like: The side pocket strapping system. It's a great idea but a real P.I.A. sometimes. I didn't get the strap on top of my gear and it would loosen up as I hiked. The thick padding on the shoulder straps would cut into my front shoulders after a few miles. No my pack was not over loaded, It weighed 26 lbs with my food and water. The padded shoulder straps are too short. The adjustment sits on the side of my breasts. Kind of pushes into them and becomes uncomfortable after a few hours. The sternum strap has 2 issues. First was it loosens up when I'm walking and it moves up or down on the shoulder straps, changing how the pack feels on my shoulders/chest. It really was annoying by day 3. I ended up using some athletic tape to prevent it from moving. BUT. Over all it is a great pack for the price. I normally have to cut stuff off my packs or change things to make it fit me the way I like it, So I'm ok with having to alter some things. I am going to change the side straps out. I think I will end up liking this pack a lot as I break it in more. It is hard for me to give up gear that fits perfect and that I had for a long time. Over all, It is a pretty good pack!

Fantastic bag
I bought this bag for multi days. I have gone light, and carry much less than I ever use to. This bag is light and incredibly comfortable. I have done up to 8 days with it, no problem. Its a 45litre bag that feels like 55litres. The mesh is a little sensitive, as it tears easily, but this is all you need if you are doing a light pack. Highly recommend and I was able to get locally, rather than ordering through the States for an ultra light weight bag that I couldn't try on.

Love this pack!
I love this pack. Most comfortable I’ve ever worn. The hip belt started coming unstitched after only 50 miles of backpacking. Love it enough to stitch it up with floss and kept going!

Comfortable, durable and all around great pack!
Extremely comfortable and has made it possible for me to hike long distances 20+ miles in the rugged high desert carrying 25-30lbs with minimal discomfort afterward. As an Army Veteran I have a few aches and pains, but this pack fits perfectly and the wide shoulder space does not aggravate my neck. The pack is very durable, spacious and has a number of useful features. In 90-100+ degrees this pack helps keep the heat from building on my back. My only wish would be for more sinch straps across the pack, it looks bulky. I would buy this pack again and it's why I came back to Gregory for a Juno 30 Hydration pack.

Great lightweight pack, would buy again in a heartbeat!
Replaced my Gregory Sage 55 with this pack while they hiking the Appalachian Trail. I love this pack!! So lightweight and easy! I use a hydration bladder with my inline water filter, and it fits right in the stretchy outside pouch. The only downfall I see is that my Sage had nicer bottom straps that I could attach my bivy to, whereas the Octal has a slightly different strap system on the bottom that isn't as easy to use. I utilize it mainly for a z-lite pad that I can just sort of cram into place.
