The beauty of the Crown 38 is that it strikes a great balance between weight and structure. The hard plastic insert is an effective and sturdy frame, but Granite Gear has not sacrificed weight in order to achieve that. I'm a recovering ultra-heavy backpacker, and the smaller size of the Crown 38 helps me prioritize what is actually needed and keep my base weight down. BV450 fits nicely (but not BV500). Side and front pockets are large and easy to access. Hip belt is very comfortable and the zipper pockets have more space than any pack I have previously owned--this has been a nice convenience. So far I have not seen any flaws in construction or quality after several overnight trips in the Rockies. I would highly recommend this pack. I don't expect I'll be using anything else for many years to come.

Do you still feel this way?

I really love this pack! At first I was skeptical that 38L would be enough space as I had only used my first backpacking pack, the Osprey Ariel 55L, but it's totally fine, even for thru hiking where I need to store plenty of food. It's a great upgrade from the Osprey in that it's way lighter, though the Ariel was a great first pack. I've hiking several hundred miles in that baby already, and so far there's minimal wear. It's also a pretty good size for ski touring! One of the best features I think is that the hip belt is SUPER adjustable. I've a smaller person, so often I max out the hipbelt to the smallest size, but this one it's a non-issue.

This slimmed down version of our thru-hiker favorite, the Crown2 60, boasts our patent-pending full adjustable Re-Fit hip belt, our new and innovative Vapor Current Mark 2 compression molded PP frame sheet with molded foam back panel, and bonus lid (removable), all while weighing in at 2.1 lbs (without lid).

Excellent Do-It-All Pack!

Granite Gear does it again - great pack! Smaller version of their award winning Crown2 60L pack, but with the roll-top feature, this bag can still swallow a ton of gear. My base weight is around 14lbs. I easily have used this for 4-5 day trip with room to spare, including all food and water. Pros: -lightweight just over 2lbs., but you can remove frame sheet and brain to have sub 2lb pack -durable -extremely smart design - webbing, tie downs, etc. in all the right spots -versatile - fully adjustable belt to get a dialed in fit; remove brain and belt and have a 10L day pack with hip belts (will need to use a bit of cord to tie one end of buckles, the other end they will connect.) -materials seem like they will hold up, but like all granite gear packs, their customer service and warranty are elite, should you run into a problem Cons: -only small gripe I have is the side mesh water pockets; very difficult to remove/replace water bottles while hiking; Wish it had the lateral opening like some packs are now providing, or at least if they were cut lower so you could reach more easily; but I typically clip water bottle to front shoulder strap, or you can use internal water bladder pocket. Overall, this pack is insanely good. I can use for an overnighter, or long distance. Even could be used as a big day pack, just remove the brain and seal up with roll-top. Like with all packs, be sure you know your spine length as the harness is NOT adjustable, just the belt is. One of the most comfortable packs I've ever used to date, I've been guiding and backpacking for almost 20 years now.
