C5 Gore-Tex Shakedry 1985 Insulated Jacket
Don't fret riding in the impending cooler and wetter season and instead get the C5 Gore-Tex Shakedry 1985 Insulated Jacket from Gore Wear. Featuring its revolutionary, waterproof GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY material with a lining of warm insulation, you'll stay warm and dry during the worst conditions. It's an incredibly lightweight jacket that blocks the wind too, so instead of checking the weather report, you can get out and focus on training instead.
Gore creates this jacket by using its industry lauded 1985 Shakedry jacket and adding Polartec Alpha insulation so it packs protection from both the cold and the rain while out riding. As a GORE-TEX Active product with SHAKEDRY Technology, it keeps the weight extremely low as it doesn't rely on a face fabric to maintain waterproof performance. Losing some grams isn't the only benefit of ridding the face fabric, it also increases its breathability so you're less likely to overheat or get too sweaty during some intensity due to the vapor transport as well as reducing the chilling effect that can result from a wetted out face fabric and the garment weight does not increase when riding during heavy rain.
As we mentioned above, what separates this Shakedry from the standard version is its addition of Polartec Alpha insulation, renowned for its warmth to weight ratio and its ability to retain body heat. This gives the jacket a little more versatility in cooler temps without having to add additional layers. Protected by the beloved Shakedry fabric that simply beads water and virtually eliminates it from soaking in, it gets its name as a few quick shakes of the jacket render the surface dry. It's also important to note that the repellency is permanent. No reproofing is required for the life of the jacket.

- Q & A
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I bought this based on the great description and that it was insulated. The 'insulation" in it is less than a very light flannel shirt. It might be good down to 60 degrees or so. Insulated to me meand good down to at least 30 degrees. I would not call this insulated by any reasonable standard. This is really more of a waterproof shell. Not what I expected all so I am returning it. Gore seems to have the shell down with a good concept, but they need to call this lightly lined instead of insulated. I honestly thought they sent me the wrong jacket when I received it. I was expecting something like the Arcteryx Atom which has real insulation and is good down to 25 degrees or so. Buy this as a shell instead, and buy the shell version which is a lot less expensive. Lack of insulation aside, the shell part of the jacket seems right on target with the description though I never put that part to much of a test.
