    Harness the sun.

Stay connected while leaving the grid behind with the Goal Zero Nomad 14 Plus Solar Panel. It allows you to charge phones, tablets, and other USB-powered devices using the power of the sun. This new and improved Nomad model is lighter and smarter than previous incarnations.

Perhaps the biggest upgrade, the new Auto Restart feature knows the difference between a device that's reached a fully charged state and one that disconnects due to cloud cover or a shadow. When it's been disconnected due to environmental causes, the Nomad 14 Plus will automatically reconnect the charging device, so you don't get back to basecamp only to find that your phone stopped charging hours ago because a rogue cloud moved in. Another smart feature is the easy-to-read LED indicator, which lets you know the strength of solar conditions and provides immediate feedback on charging speed.

When the sun's not overhead, the detachable kickstand lets you prop it up so you angle the panel to where the sun's strongest. It's also built tough and waterproof so you don't have to baby it in the backcountry, and its compact, lightweight design means you can take it on extended backpacking trips or other excursions where space is limited.

    Car camping approved

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I brought this along for a 4 day car camping trip to where we were spending a lot of time on the beach and running around Santa Barbara. It is light weight, charged my phone and is simple to use. It does charge pretty slowly, I believe it says 2 hours to fully charge a phone. I wasn't able to test it for that long so I can't say if that is accurate or not. On a full sunny morning on the beach the lights were on 3/4 capacity so I'm not convinced this would be great for a cloudy day as it claims.

Great idea; not great for backpacking.

Recently took on 4 day backpacking trip and was not worth its weight, bulk and size. Weight would have been much better used to just bring a good charged battery pack. Definitely depends on what you are doing and how much charge you need. I just wanted to keep my phone and a speaker charged for the trip and a decent battery pack was all I needed. Lugged the solar panel around the whole time and never used it. Also it would not directly charge my iPhone 10 which also limited its value to me substantially.

      Perfect for Outdoor Photography

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

For outdoorsmen who are carrying a lot of electronics that need to stay charged, the Goal Zero charger is the perfect solution. Carrying extra batteries around is kind of par for the course when you take your camera everywhere, but cold temperatures and/or a great sunset can quickly drain your battery, and it's nice to have an easily packable source of energy with you to keep you taking pictures when you won't see an electrical outlet for a few days. I'm totally sold on it after only a few uses.

Goal Zero Nomad 14 Plus Solar Panel

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I sent this as a gift to my brother in Florida in preparation for Hurricane Irma.

In perfect conditions (clear skies and sun directly overhead), this panel can output 14 watts, which is enough to charge approximately two IPhones.
