    Casual cyclist.

Modeled along the same lines as the top-level competition Empire shoes, the New Road Republic Shoes democratize the casual-meets-cycling aesthetics of Giro's lace-up cycling kicks. Instead of the low weight and high price of the ambitious Empire, the Republic features a walking sole made of DuPont's Zytel nylon and armored with replaceable, sneaker-style walking pads that provide plenty of grip while you're navigating the pedestrian world between rides.

Of course, the Republics are cycling shoes, so the soles are still plenty stiff and bipedal freedom doesn't come at the cost of efficiency when you're pedaling a bicycle. They also feature a breathable, durable, non-stretch microfiber upper that's similar to their imperial cousin, and the seven points of lace-up contact mean that the fit is just as customizable. A loop on the tongue locks the laces down after you've run the bunny around the tree, so the laces sit tight in their rabbit hole instead of hopping into your chainring.

    • Stiff, nylon cycling sole with tread pads for walkability
    • Lace-up closure provides seven points of contact for unparalleled fit
    • Breathable microfiber upper won't suffocate feet on long trips

    Stylin Kicks

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

These shoes fit great! The toe box is a little bigger than you find on the Empire version of this shoe, so if you need a little more volume, these are your friend. I love the lace up design, they are light and very walkable. I use these as my commuting shoes and love that they look a little more normal, plus they aren't too bad to walk in.
I am typically a US size 9 and have always worn size 43 in brands like Specialized, Shimano and Sidi. I tried the Giro suggested size 42 and the 42.5 and both felt a little small so I stuck with my normal size 43 and have been happy with the fit.

    Very loose toe box

There are so many things that are attractive about this shoe. I really wanted them to work, but they just don't . For my size foot, there was just TOO much room where the toes are. It was cavernous. I tried sizing down and tying the shoes as tight as possible.
How can you really get an efficient pedal up stroke if your foot is swimming around?
Also, the construction of the shoe just feels rubbery and cheap in general.
I wish someone made a shoe that we could walk around in that wasnt a mountain bike shoe- right? Big untapped market I think for us Weekend warriors who want to ride 40 miles for a cup of coffee.

    Stylish and perfect fitment

Commuter shoes. Comfortable for walking. I sometimes walk my daughter to school a half a mile away and then jump on my bike to got go work. You will get many compliments on how nice they look. I'm a size 10 regular shoe size and these fit like a glove. Foot does not slide around at all.

AWESOME SHOES!!!!! great for commuters. They arent as walker friendly as my DRZ shoes, but are much lighter and way more solid. very stylish also i must say

    Clean design, customizable fit.

    3 things to like here:
    1. Laces allow for form-fitted comfort.
    2. Design is simple, no-nonsense.
    3. High sole construction and pads around the cleat make walking a pleasure.

    Great Shoe

Have had these shoes for five months and they are still in great shape. They fit so well I seldom think about my feet. Will buy another pair for sure.

    These shoes are FANTASTIC!

I bought these to replace some 25-year old Sidi touring shoes, which were manufactured before locking cleats on pedals existed, but which were intended for use simply to fit into toe clips on the pedals. I liked the Sidi shoes which were lightweight with a super-hard sole and had shoe laces (before velcro snaps on shoes were invented).

These Giro Republic shoes are effectively a perfect replacement. Although they're designed to attach cleats to the bottom, they don't need to have them. So they can still be inserted into my existing pedals with existing toe clips on them.

Furthermore, there are rubberized pads screwed onto the bottom of the hard plastic sole, which make walking around on floors or carpet or concrete very very comfortable and easy. The extra height added by these pads does not interfere with the shoe's ability to be inserted into the toe clips on the pedal (they just need to be loosened a bit), so this is really perfect.

Most amazingly, the shoes are super comfortable and supportive. And the super-hard sole and overall shoe construction seems to undeniably deliver more power and more efficiently, from leg to the pedal. I'm quite surprised at the increase in speed resulting from finally changing shoes from the old worn out Sidi's to these new Giro Republic's.

All in all... FABULOUS! Highly recommended.

But they run small in their sizing, so don't believe the US/European conversion chart. I originally ordered 43 but it was too small. The replacement 43.5 was somehow EVEN SMALLER than the 43 (obviously a manufacturing mistake, but identically small on a second 43.5 replacement). I finally ordered a 44, which is perfect (for a 9 1/2 - 10 US men's size) even though it claims to be for a slightly larger foot.

Great for riding, great for walking, great fit (finally, at 44), super comfortable, work great with toe clips on the pedals and no cleats on the shoes.

      Highly recommended.

Forgot to mention that the somewhat too small 43 and the just right 44 were in lead/gum color. It was the white shoes which I tried in 43.5 (because there was no stock in 43.5 for the lead/gum) which were incredibly much smaller than marked.

Perhaps a bad batch of white shoes, where could have actually been 42 or 42.5 but definitely not 43.5.

However the lead/gum 43 and 44 seemed accurate, though they ran small so that the expected correct 43 was actually too small for my 9 1/2 US men's foot while the supposedly too large 44 was actually just right.

Fortunately there was no problem at all doing the multiple RMA exchanges, until I finally got the right shoes (in the original lead/gum color I wanted) that fit perfectly.

      Great vendor.

I agree with "Dar", I ordered a pair of size 44 based on his review and I wear a typical US 9.5 as well, glad I went with the size 44 because there is no way they would have fit with the recommended size 42.5. ALSO***** beware that if you use the Shimano SPD M520-M530 pedals, or anything similar, these shoes will not work with them. The pads in the front are too thick and will not allow the two bolt cleat to engage the pedal. I had to remove the front pads of my shoes for the engagement to work and of course that pretty much defeats the purpose of the shoe. Looks like eggbeaters are the best way to go here.

@smo4009146 couldn't you just theoretically shave off some of the extra pads on the front of the shoe to get enough clearance for the pedals to engage with the pd-m530's? I wonder if they'd still offer enough comfort to walk in and bike in after...

      1) love the look of the white, but live in NYC and worried it'll turn sooty in no cleanable are they?

      2) Saw someone say that shimano m520 and the like don't fit...does anyone know if they also preclude pedals like A530 and the like (clipless with platform on the reverse side)?
