A no-brainer.

When 5pm hits, break out of the office and head for your favorite stretch of tree-lined singletrack to shed the stress of the day and breathe some fresh air. Whether your plans include hitting the dirt jump course with your ride crew and a few cold ones or you've got fast, rowdy trail riding in mind, wear Giro's Montaro MIPS Helmet to stay cool and comfortable while you ride while knowing your gray matter will be protected when you take a good spill.

The Montaro's biggest feature to get excited about is its use of MIPS technology. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to a thin, flexible inner basket designed to rotate slightly to absorb energy during damaging side impacts. In addition to MIPS, the Montaro has a deep shape with extended coverage along the lower part of the head, and a reliable In-Mold construction to handle more standard bumps and tumbles. If you decide to slack out your frame and head for the lifts, the helmet's P.O.V. Plus visor easily integrates with goggles, and the breakaway camera mount gives you a chance to take footage of your biggest sends. Before you ride, you'll be able to get just the right fit quickly with Giro's Roc Loc Air fit system, which works with the Montaro's 16 vents and plush padding to keep air moving and sweat away from your eyes.

I like the helmet. The fit is similar to the other Giro helmets I have worn for road, TT and MTB in the past. I have not had it long enough to comment on the longevity of the pads. Ventilation seems OK. The GoPro mount is supposed to be a selling point but it's not quite up to the job. My helmet came without a bolt for the GoPro interface and the mount seems to be a bit fussy about the length of the bolt, standard GoPro mount bolts do not reliably work without adding spacers and even then the mount does not hold the camera steady unless it is severely over-tightened. I had to use a wrench to get it tight enough.

This helmet's a winner

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Really liking my Giro MIPS Montaro helmet and I've worn it on more than 20 rides so far. Ventilation is good, fit is good ; would love it to be a bit lighter weight but I often forget I'm wearing it, which is the best testimonial for any helmet.

Go to trail helmet

This helmet has really impressed me so far. It has great adjustability around the forehead and also has many positions for the visor. Ventilation is excellent, and the finish of the plastic material seems to be semi scratch resistant. Better than helmets I have used in the past, and MIPS protection is always a bonus when playing with gravity.

Solid helmet!

I have never used a half-dome helmet but I wanted to invest in one, finally. This has MIPS, which I really wanted, is light and breathable and is pretty comfy. Happy with the purchase. Now to get out and ride with it!

Great trail helmet

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This helmet has great coverage for average trail riding. Very good price for a MIPS helmet to. Pretty breathable but not as much as something like the Forefront.

I chose the Montaro in the end

While shopping for a new helmet I actually went into a local bike store to try a few on but found the price on Backcountry to be cheaper. I tried the Montero on while in the store and really liked the way it felt compared with other brands and models. That made buying decision a lot easier. I definitely recommend measuring your head to get the proper size. Size up if you measure at the high end of the recommended size -- it will fit much better

Sturdy as it comes for a half dome

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I've been using this helmet for about a week now and am pretty pleased with how durable it is. No hard crashes yet but with any kind of blow, it's impressive how little you feel it. My only complaint is that it doesn't quite fit 100% perfectly to my head, but overall a very comfortable and durable helmet.

Didn't Quite Fit

I bought this as a gift but the fit didn't work. Ending up going with a TLD A2. This looks like a well constructed helmet with nice coverage and venting. If this works for your head shape it is a great option.

Super Comfortable and Looks Great

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Fit:
True to size

This helmet fits perfectly, and has no points that poke or prod anywhere. The Roc Loc Air fit system is very easy to adjust and fine tune for the perfect fit. Also, this helmet looks fantastic. I got the Matte Sonic Psych color way and am not disappointed with the looks. The rubber grippers on the back vents hold goggle straps perfectly in place, and the visor flips up with plenty of room store goggles out of the way.

Looks sweet, good ventilation.

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This helmet is pretty sweet. It looks awesome, and has great ventilation. However, make sure you bring your favorite riding shades when you try on the helmet. I could see some having some hot spots around the temples. Love this helmet so far!

Great Look and Design

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Happy with this lightweight helmet, the MIPS technology (extra assurance), style and features included in the design: breathability and adjustability and a cool aerodynamic look for ripping on the mountain trails. Love the Matte Black, but honestly, the color choices made it a bit tough to choose which to go with. Can't go wrong with any of them.

Great helmet

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I couldn’t be happier with this helmet. It fits great, stays cool on hot days, and is excellent when it comes to protection. I recently took a very hard fall and a significant impact to the head/helmet. This helmet prevented things from being much worse. I have had a few concussions from lesser impacts over the years and this helmet out performed my expectations. This helmet is certainly worth the price.

Great helmet from Giro

Big fan of this helmet! Fit's great and is super comfortable on head, light weight but still feels strong enough if it ever needs to be used, and it's definitely a good looking helmet.

I look so cool

Familiarity:

stylish, lightweight, super comfy.... this helmet checks all those boxes. I was drawn to this helmet for the "flair" that goes around the base of the helmet. I think its a nice addition to any of the color schemes.

Comfortable Helmet

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a very comfortable helmet, and the Matte Blue/Lime colorway is awesome! The GoPro mount is a bear to attach to the helmet, but at least I know my camera won't fall off! I like the Roc Loc Air fit system, but the wheel is smaller than I'm used to which makes it a little harder to tighten. Overall this is a great helmet! My Oakley Flak Jacket sunglasses fut under it great!

Jeff can you store the sunglasses on your helmet like on road helmets?

Snug, Comfortable Helmet

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have a 24" head and went with the Large. It fits great. Super snug without squeezing my noggin. It doesn't flop all over the place like helmets I've had in the past. It took maybe 2 mins to get the fit dialed and I haven't touched it since. Really am liking this helmet so far. Happy that I got it!

Good fit, bad pads

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Helmet fits well, very comfortable. Doesn't interfere with the fit of my Oakley sunglasses. As others have stated, the Velcro liner on the sweat pads is an issue, it began to pull away from the foam after an hour of use. Easy enough to replace or repair, but a very annoying issue on an otherwise great helmet.

>Rating:

Any idea if Giro has fixed the problem with the forehead pads? My wife and I have both owned this helmet (her the Montara), and both forehead pads delaminated. Other than that I love the helmet and would buy again. Thus, why I'm wondering....

I had the exact same issue. Forehead pads completely fell apart in under a year. Giro said they'd send a free replacement set, but unfortunately they are out of them for another 6 weeks...doesn't help too much :/. Any Gearheads have more info??!! thanks

Given the goggle compatibility and the rear protection, would this helmet be a candidate for skiing or snow boarding? Yeah, I see the million vents, but curious to see if anyone has had the same thought. I usually wear a balaclava, special ops style, anyhow.

Hey Jon, This helmet isn't certified for snowsports so I wouldn't really recommend it. I'll reach out and we can chat about what you're looking for in a helmet. Ben
