    Montara MIPS Helmet

If your weekend agenda includes mashing up climbs, shredding descents, and taking in beautiful ridgeline views, make sure to bring along the Giro Montara MIPS Helmet. Designed for long days spent on the trails, the Montara is constructed with a durable In-Mold polycarbonate shell surrounding an impact-absorbing EPS foam liner and Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) so you can bring industry-leading tech along for the ride.

The big deal with MIPS technology is its ability to reduce impact force in the event of a crash. MIPS consists of a strategically anchored, thin liner on the inside of the helmet that looks exceptionally simple, but serves a big purpose. That little liner is designed to move independently of the helmet shell and diffuse certain types of impact force better than standard, non-MIPS helmets.

Beyond impacts, Giro ensures the Montara won't slow you down by designing it to integrate with your other riding gear, including a built-in camera mount with a breakaway design. Further, Giro's P.O.V. Plus visor adjustment system allows you to adjust the visor to accommodate full goggles with the helmet. Strap grippers are included on the back of the helmet to keep the goggles in place.

To keep the helmet from feeling cumbersome on hot days and long climbs, Giro created space for 16 vents with internal channeling for efficient air flow. The Montara is lined with hydrophilic, anti-microbial padding that absorbs sweat and, together with the Roc Loc fit system, provides a comfortable fit against your skin.

    • Helmet for shredding singletrack in style and comfort
    • In-Mold polycarbontate shell is durable yet lightweight
    • EPS foam absorbs and disperses impact over a wider area
    • MIPS technology reduces rotational forces in a crash
    • 16 vents provide plenty of airflow with internal channeling
    • Roc Loc fit system customizes the fit for a secure, comfortable hold
    • Lining absorbs perspiration and resists the buildup of odors
    • P.O.V. Plus visor adjustment accommodates full goggles

    best

I am new to mountain biking, so I don't have any helmets to compare this to, but I love this helmet. It is like I am not wearing anything at all, it is so light and comfortable. I think it looks great, and is highly adjustable.

      Comfortable, Cool

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great helmet! Fits well and works great for a smaller heads too. It's comfy to wear. I ride alot in the alpine mountains of northern Utah and hit the Moab area in the SW desert every chance I can get; down there the temps can climb quickly but the is well vented which helps tons. I picked up the Matte Iceberg color which totally rocks.

      Most Comfortable!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wear this helmet for literally everything. There is plenty of adjustment to this helmet to ensure comfort and no pressure points. Cannot say enough good things about this helmet. An additional plus is the color and patterns that are available. I got the "Matte Mint" option and love it!

      Most Comfortable!

      25 Miles No Problem

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm a beginner mountain biker and was between sizes for this helmet. I went with a medium and have it set at two clicks above the minimum. My first ride with this helmet was a 25 mile MTB on Bois Blanc Island in Michigan. The morning was cool and sprinkling, and then it got humid and 80s. My head stayed a comfortable temperature on our 4 hour ride. The MIPS system sits on your head and there is a space between that and the outer helmet for air flow. The MIPS system is thin and also vented, so there is not much right on your head. The straps were comfortable and the visor took a branch or two. This helmet is also good for a quick ride to the beach or ferry. I'm really excited about my first Giro purchase, first MIPS purchase, and first real MTB helmet. Can't wait to wear it again and see if there is something similar for ski season. My boyfriend thought it was cute, too.

      25 Miles No Problem

Easy choice for trail riding anywhere

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have ridden with this helmet on rides in the Tetons and across the PNW including British Columbia. Its seen race time, casual rides and I have been spotted with it still on my head well after the ride has been completed. I would say the best feature of this helmet is comfort; no pressure points and easy fit adjustments - making it easy to forget its on.

      Put this on your melon

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Montara helmet fits comfortably, breathes well, and has some serious style points. Even though some people say the jury is still out on mips, I say every dollar spent protecting your head is absolutely worth it. I took a serious fall straight onto my head in this helmet, and came away without a concussion. 5 stars.

      Awesome.

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

This helmet is awesome! It’s lightweight and breathable but still feels protective. I like that it has the MIPS protection for only slightly more money than the other helmets. I feel very safe riding in it. The dial adjuster on the back is great for readjusting on the fly. The visor is a nice length, blocks the sun but you can still see great. Love the color!

      breathable, durable, and cool looking

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've worn this helmet in all seasons, put it through many long days of riding and it's my favorite helmet I've owned so far. It's breathable in the summer and it has saved me from head injuries a few times going over the handle bars. I also love the color options.. cant go wrong with the sleek black look in my opinion.

You had me at MIPS & the AWESOME colors!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Seriously impressed with how small this helmet sizes down to. I have a petite head (49-50cms around) and I can tighten this helmet tight enough to feel snug and comfortable. I've had such a difficult time finding an adult ladies helmet that fits my noggin this well! Most of the time I get that awkward gaping void in the back of the helmet between the synched down interior mechanism and the outer shell of the helmet...but, not with this one. The vents are awesome as well and it seriously feels so airy & light on! The MIPS makes me feel super safe and all the color choices are a breath of fresh air from the typical norm. All-in-all I'm pretty stoked on this helmet right now!!!

You had me at MIPS & the AWESOME colors!

      Passes the pony tail test

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Fit's a pony tail through the roc loc thing and is comfy. Visor helps to keep sun out of your eyes too. bonus points for the bright color and being on sale.

      Passes the pony tail test

I bought it for my mom

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Need I say more? I want my mom to be safe on the trails while looking cool. I trusted this helmet to do the job and it's lived up to all my expectations!

      Super Rad Super Safe

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Everything about this helmet is stellar! Except the strap sizing, which is super weird and off and I still can't quite figure out what to do to get it right.

      Mostly OK

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

Mostly this helmet works great. I got the size medium in white. Retaining system at the back still has room for my ponytail. Looks great. Feels great when I put it on. No problem with the chin straps as a previous reviewer had. My only complaint is that the inner shell MIPS layer snags on my hair and I almost always end up with a few strands pulling on my head for my whole ride (which means I end up with a headache and can't wait to get the helmet off on long rides). This wouldn't be an issue for people leaving their hair loose rather than braided or in a ponytail. Haven't seen other brands' MIPS layers, so I don't know if they vary between brands - too bad they don't show photos of the inside of the helmets.

      Poor strap sizing

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wanted to really like this helmet. I've been biking for 14 years and have always fit Giro the best. I was on the cusp of a S and M, and went with the medium since the chin strap fit so much more comfortable. After several rides, I couldn't tighten down the medium anymore and had to wear a headband to make it fit well. Backcountry would not take the medium back since it had been more than 30 days. I ended up purchasing a small from another dealer and it fit my head great....but the chin strap is drastically shorter than what comes with the medium and I felt like I was being strangled. I was able to return the small to the other dealer and went with my old standby, the Hex.

Like a Hug for Your Head

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is the most comfortable helmet I have EVER owned. I love it!! I got the Matte Black Galaxy color and it doesn't overhead my head even in direct sunlight. I was slightly bummed that the "matte black" was a little shinier than I expected, but I love the Galaxy trim. The vents are awesome and it seriously feels like my head feels better with it on than off, but that could just be the stoke talking. The MIPS makes me feel super safe about my head and neck as well :)
