It's okay to be picky.
We'll go ahead and admit that we're perhaps a little bit overly picky about our riding gear when temperatures start dropping and storms begin to brew. But we don't see the shame in it, because asserting your needs is the only sure-fire way to have them met, and finding a jacket that enables us to maintain comfort and confidence to head out when the conditions are inhospitable is key to us committing to our base miles throughout the frosty months. Insisting we wanted something with a tailored fit, light weight, and elemental protection from a jacket that's a bit burlier than the NS Air 20, but still packable, Giordana offered us the NS Air 60 Jacket for men. A light jacket that performs with power and flexibility, and cuts through wind and resists water so we can get in our interval training in late fall and early spring with comfort.
Best suited for riders who live in 4-season climates, the NS-Air 60 provides more protection than the ultra-lightweight NS-Air 20, allowing you to retain a bit more warmth inside, but is lighter and less water resistant than the nearly impermeable NS-Storm Rain Jacket. The happy-medium between the two, the NS-Air 60 packs down smaller than the Storm, and a touch larger than the 20, but offers water protection that the 20 lacks. If you're riding in true monsoon conditions, it won't seal out every water drop, since it lacks the sealed seams of the Storm, but it will provide you with some shelter from inclement weather.
As we’ve come to expect from Giordana, the NS Air 60 fits slim, tailored, and streamlined for less drag and a more comfortable fit on the bike. Admittedly, it's not quite as snug fitting as Giordana's summer gear, since it's best used with a layer underneath, but it still features cycling-specific designs that reduce excess fabric that catches in the wind and whips behind you. The front is cut higher than some cycling jackets, which may seem a bit too short when standing straight, but ultimately the jacket wasn't built for standing, and when you drop into your riding position you'll find that the high-cut front reduces bulges and wrinkles across your stomach that can catch wind and increase drag. A high collar lets the jacket extend its coverage up to the throat, so you don't have cold gusts bursting. The jacket has one rear pocket designed to stow away the shell, so you can pack it into your saddle bag or jersey pocket when the storm has passed. This packability means there's no excuse to not take the jacket along on late fall and early spring rides that can be freckled with inclement weather.
