    The ur-tights.

Any brand can throw together a set of pajama-shaped thermal bib tights, but Giordana's FR-C Trade Men's Bib Tights represent the pinnacle of fit and function—and they have for multiple product generations. The secret lies in the tights' construction, which takes place entirely in Giordana's own Italian facility and gives the brand complete control over everything that bears the iconic centaur logo. With the FR-C Trade Bib Tights, brand namesake Giordana tells us she wanted to keep the focus on creating a classic Roubaix model, so the tights eschew the DWR treatment of the G-Shield and AV lines, making the FR-C Trade Bib Tights a pure expression of thermal cycling kit.

The tights' body is a blend of two materials: Super Roubaix and Super Roubaix Carbon. The former is Giordana's go-to thermal material because it combines the thermal insulation of a soft, brushed inner face with stretch and breathability that—while understandably not quite on par with the Lycra used in the FR-C summer bib shorts—go a long way toward informing the legendary fit of the FR-C bib tights. This construction is supplemented with strategically positioned panels of Super Roubaix Carbon wrapping the knees and extended down the calves.

While both materials are gently compressive, the Carbon version ups the compression game a little more, providing additional support to your knees when spinning in cold weather makes them even more vulnerable. The fabric's compressive stretch is highlighted by the tights' paneling, which is laid out in a cycling-specific pattern that we wouldn't recommend for gymnastics but that figuratively disappears when you're on the bike.

Obviously, the body materials differ from the FR-C summer shorts, but the bibs are virtually the same. Instead of saddling you with an unnecessary layer of thermal insulation on the chest, the FR-C Trade Bib Tights end their thermal work at the lower stomach, transitioning to a lightweight, stretchy, and soft bib construction that doesn't interfere with your layering strategy. The ankles help maintain fit with zippers that let you unzip to pull the tights on over your feet but then zip closed to help eliminate any gaps.

Like with the bib straps, Giordana opts for the same chamois in summer-weight kit, sewing in the same Cirro S chamois that it uses in the FR-C and NX-G bibs. The Cirro S chamois features a slimr, refined design that tapers on the edges to eliminate any transitional ridges with the tights. Giordana minimizes the feel and look of the chamois, striking a race-appropriate amount of bulk without eliminating its plush, long-ride cushioning. New for this year, Giordana also introduces its Copa Mondiale, a male-specific recessed area on the top of the chamois made to improve ride quality and add all-encompassing support to an area crucial to long-term comfort.

    • Cold-weather cycling tights with a racing fit
    • Multi-material construction targets compression and warmth
    • Tailored with a cycling-specific fit for life in the saddle
    • Equipped with the same chamois as Giordana's summer race shorts
    • Minimalist bib straps lie flat and don't interfere with layering

    It's Only Been a Month....

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 170lbs

This is my second pair of the FormaRed Bib tights. My first impression of this pair is they were a down grade over the pair I bought two years prior, but after a month of use I was wrong. They are just as warm and comfortable as the older pair. Although they have removed some of the wind blocking material that is on the thighs, but it does not appear to make difference.

With that being said, these tights are simply the best winter cycling tights I have ever used. They are extremely comfortable from temps as low as about 20 degrees to as high as even 50 degrees. They will fit very tight when you first put them on, but you will not notice it when you are out on the road. The chamois pad is also just about as good as it gets.

The only knock I would truly give these tights is when it is really wet out, you will get wet, but not necessarily soaked. However, I have never wore any piece of lower body cycling appear that truly keeps you dry.

    Maybe mine was a lemon?

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

Maybe mine was a lemon so 3 stars instead of 2 because there is not way for me to be sure.
When I first got these I loved them! Most comfy pad I have ever ridden on. Saddle disappears. Nice feel overall with slightly tight anke openings but no big deal. Reason for the 3 stars is the threads on the outer edge of both straps started to unravel after 4 uses. At the price these were I should get years out of these without something like that happening. I always wash in cold delicate cycle in a machine without a harsh center agitator. Hang dry as always. Never had an issue with any other bottoms(PI and Rapha)
Anyways, I felt compelled to write this review because of how CC/Backcountry handled the issue. Scott Golsan who is my personal "gear head" took care of the issue without any issues or questions. He was great. Sent me a return label and set me up with an exchange for some Assos that I will go with instead. These Giordanas were great other than my thread issue, but I am not willing to take the chance that it was a design issue and not a one off. If you are reading this and do not already have a personal gear head as a go should reach out to Scott. He is very knowlegeable and provides great service! Here is his contact.

    Superb product from Giordana

I wore these bib tights today for the first time for a 65-mile ride in 50-70 degree weather. They were superb, just like any Giordana product I have tried.. Fit like a glove, no restriction anywhere, the chamois it top notch. Minor complaints: (1) The zipper on the back of the calf doesn't stay zipped all the way down, but possibly because they fit very snug on my calves. If you have skinny calves, you'll likely not experience this problem. (2) The black/red suspenders bled red on my white base layer. I haven't washed it yet so we'll see if it's permanent. (3) The chamois goes up quite high up front, and gives you a bit of a moose knuckle look. All in all, minor gripes.
