The most popular GPS just got better.

The Garmin eTrex 20x GPS features a higher resolution display and expanded internal memory, all without sacrificing its tough design, intuitive navigation interface, or multi-use functionality. Upgraded over the original eTrex 20, the eTrex 20x features a 2.2-inch, 65K color, sunlight-readable display and worldwide shaded relief basemap for navigating with easy-reading precision. Paperless geocaching stores compatible GPX files with all the pertinent information, such as terrain, hints, difficulty level, and descriptions.

Tracking both traditional GPS and Russian-based GLONASS satellites, the Garmin eTrex 20x GPS finds your position approximately 20-percent faster than traditional GPS receivers. Suddenly, finding your precise location is incredibly quick, as GLONASS adds 24 additional satellites for speedy signal transmission. Plus, HotFix satellite prediction gives regular users even faster satellite acquisition by predicting the positioning of GPS satellites up to three-days after its last use.

Another major upgrade, 1.7GB of built-in memory stores up to 200 routes to follow, 200 completed tracks, and 2000 waypoints. MicroSD expandable memory (card not included) provides greater capacity to store routes, tracks, and waypoints, as well as accommodating Garmin's various map offerings. In fact, the eTrex 20x works with a plethora of aftermarket maps, including high-definition BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, TOPO 24k, BlueChart nautical, and City Navigator NT for turn-by-turn driving directions (maps sold separately).

Optimized for use in the wilderness, the eTrex 20x GPS easily survives small drops with its rubberized design. IPX-7 standard construction means it's dust, dirt, humidity, and water-resistant, withstanding one-meter submersion up to 30-minutes. 25-hour battery life ensures plenty of juice for extensive outings, with the ability to swap 2AA batteries at a moment's notice. Plus, it effortlessly updates with Garmin Express software, which is available for free on both Mac and PC. This GPS comes with quick start-up instructions and a USB cable for updating your device.

    Incredible Versatile and Compact

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had the eTrex 20 for a couple years now, and it's never caused any problems for me. I've used it for hunting, geocaching, and for just finding trails and marking waypoints. It's got dependable battery life, lasting me a good couple hours of screen on time with full back light.
It lacks specialization that some other GPS systems integrate (marine or hunting focused systems), but you can still load maps onto it.

    Nice for backcountry route finding

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this in preparation for kayaking the grand canyon. I have been using almost daily since just getting to know it and how in functions. It has been rock solid performance wise. I typically wear it around my neck or keep it in my pack. I was concerned that the toggle/joystick could be damaged if lightly crushed in a pack but so far it has not happened. I use Garmin Basecamp to manage my map subscription and upload GPX format waypoints into the device. My only complaints are that navigating the various menus and modes within the device is not very intuitive and sometimes I have a hard time finding certain menus unless I have the manual close by to consult, and learning the ropes with downloading maps into the device and utilizing the Base Camp software to plan routes and manage waypoints is not intuitive either. Surely this process could be made more user friendly by Garmin. I am definitely happy with this device and would recommend it.
