    Adventure comes standard.

By combining the best of the user-friendly Edge 1000 and touring-focused Edge Touring computers, Garmin’s new Edge Explore 1000 Cycling Computer delivers safe and easy-to-use navigational capabilities alongside high-level performance data tracking, with a few new innovations thrown in just for fun.

Having trouble deciding where to go? The Edge Explore can actually pick a ride for you. Just let it know how far you want to go and the computer will spit out three options, complete with elevation profiles, so you’re not stuck riding the same old loop again and again. The Edge Explore can toggle between landscape and portrait modes, sync with your phone to send notifications, and interface with all sorts of sensors and trackers. It even identifies points of interest via the preloaded Garmin Cycle Map, so you don’t miss anything worth seeing.

Wonder if you’re riding into a storm? You won’t when you have the Edge Explore’s temperature tracker and weather forecast functionality. Even more importantly, its Incident Detection feature uses a built-in accelerometer to detect crashes, and then the Edge Explore sends notifications to a set list of emergency contacts. You can also send manual notifications or cancel them if you don’t need help. The Edge Explore is also compatible with Garmin’s automatic Varia Smart Bike Lights, so you hopefully never have to put Incident Detection to the test.

    Outstanding Navigation Aid

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I purchased the Garmin 1000 as a navigation aid. I give it 5 stars just download my tcx file and away we go, no more cue sheets. It is like having a forward looking radar. I certainly do not use many of the fancy features but for a 70 year old cyclist it is great. I have been cycling for 50 years and this device has significantly increased my cycling fun

    Not ready for prime time

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

If I were you, I'd wait for a software update or two before putting out $450 for the Garmin Edge Explore 1000. It does the basics well enough. The interface is good. But connecting to wifi is more miss than hit. Syncing with an iPhone or Garmin's web based Connect app is also poor. Text message integration does not work at all. No reason to believe accident detection would work. I develop software professionally so I can tell you from experience that this product is still in beta. I can also guess that the developers who work on the product know its flawed.
