Why We Like The Garmin Edge 530 Bike Computer

Garmin's latest gadget, the Edge 530 Bike Computer, continues its excellent legacy of offering a trove of information at our fingertips for ride analysis and afterward at home. With its touchscreen, route planning and mapping, compatibility with various sensors, and connection with fellow riders and family at home, the 530 provides everything we want in a modern bike computer and gives us a little extra. It simply makes riding in places we've never been before and training effectively, easier and also makes the ride potentially safer. This particular model adds the sensor bundle of speed, cadence, and heart rate so you can get the most out of the 530.

This Edge 530 includes the Garmin Cycle Map with popularity routing. Using its Garmin Connect database, Garmin finds well-ridden routes in your current location and even recommends the direction that's most popular. Additionally, it provides off-course recalculation assistance to quickly get you back to the start when needed.

Returning features include group messaging and tracking letting you communicate with the pack without having to pull out the phone from your back pocket. So if the group takes a wrong turn or someone has a mechanical, if you're paired with GroupTrack, it's easy to regroup. It also receives assistance and compatibility with its Varia rearview radar and lights (sold separately) so you can see and be seen, while a new bike alarm rounds out the list of cycling safety features.

The 530 is compatible with ANT+ and Bluetooth sensors such as powermeters and includes speed (for indoor or outdoor training), cadence, and heart rate monitor, providing real-time metrics that you can view on the ride and analyze later. By paring with these compatible sensors, the 530 provides insights on your VO2 max, advises recovery time, training balance, heat and altitude acclimation, nutrition, hydration and more.

Once connected to Garmin's Connect IQ store, you can easily customize the Edge 530 with free apps, widgets, and data fields. For instance, a weather app can keep you aware of changing conditions, while training apps let you, and your coach, know if you are doing the workouts correctly. Every data field is easily customizable letting you put important information exactly where you want on the easy to read touchscreen screen.

Water resistance gets an IPX7 rating which is more than enough protection for rainy rides and 'cross conditions. One area that really impressed us was its 20-hour claimed battery life and the ability to work with the Garmin Charge power pack for up to 40 hours of additional battery life. Included with the computer is a flush out-front mount, standard mount, USB cable, and manual.

Great Useful, if the touch screen is ready.

I bought this last week, and have fun with this toy. However, if touch screen is ready, this must be more useful to use it.

Poorly constructed - not buying Garmin again

18 month old Garmin 530, screen bubbles with a bit of rain then falls off and put the unit in alarm. And it is supposed to be IPX7. Was a great unit but not if it can't even last 18 months with only a 12 month warranty. Wahoo next!

For bikepacking and day tours

I used it for about 18 Months. It is a great gadget. It greatest helps is on climbs, when I was using a course it keeps me on track about the ascension. Having 10 field in real time is also great. BUT... while on bikepacking countest, or just on tours the Edge 530 turns off and than back on again. No too often but enough to give one a short anxiety kick when in middle of nowhere... a forrest in the middle of Transylvania, where I live...

Have 2 keep re-registering

Garmin not so good. My 530 somehow, once again, needed to be re-synched and re-registered. Sucks. Lost many ride histories. I’m really not pleased, nor would I recommend, Garmin units for cycling.

Garmin Firmware/Software sucks

I was trying to install a course map for STP onto my Garmin 530. Garmin Connect and Garmin Express had both been talking to my 530 for months, but couldn't find it when I tried to send the STP course. I had to completely remove the 530 and re-instal it to complete the operation. This is the kind of issue that I run into any time that I try to do something involving Garmin Firmware or Software.

Possible Improvements...

Overall, I think two things need improvement and this can be done via the upgrades on the app itself (or a software upgrade)... 1. The font currently is too thick - reducing effective visibility. So, a font change option or should switch over to maybe something like Ariel Narrow. 2. The data screens config options should be connected to a grid on the phone - this way, the phone's touch screen will ease the rider to do the changes in secs, and the same would reflect on the device on the go... it just needs a simple code, but will take the interface to the next-gen. 3. QR code on the device screen can be used to connect the setup app on the phone or the Wi-Fi settings. Simple and snappy. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Great hardware, terrible software

Computer has been a bit of a disappointment. It is abnormally difficult to connect to bluetooth. Almost every time I get a 'cannot connect to garmin servers' message when syncing data. When I do get it to connect to bluetooth when I try to sync from garmin connect it is never successful- always receive a 'sync failed, device busy' error message. Every time I try to upload a ride from the device manually there is always an 'upload failed' error message. The only way it will actually sync is to plug the device in manually to my computer. For the price of this device, it works very poorly! The endless troubleshooting forums for this device and independent developer blogs describing how to use the hardware without actually using their software reveals how common these issues are. Per garmin's troubleshooting instructions I have had to factory reset the device - each time, a time consuming nightmare to connect to my phone.

good connected navigator for a fair prize

With Speed, Cadence, Remote, HRM sensors and the Rally RS200 Power-meter pedals, this robust compact cycling navi really becomes a connected powerhouse for serious analytics both live during training and later analysis via the Connect app and -portal. Battery lasts forever. Though its routing capabilities, available apps (via the mediocre ConnectIQ store) and its UI (through soo many functions via too many button presses), feel outdated compared to modern Smartphones. Setting-up data screens after many firmware updates sadly still can’t be done drag-drop via the Connect app yet only via zillion button presses in the 530. Once finally setup though, no need to reconfigure this luckily ever again. All things considered, a very handy versatile bike-computer. Recommended

No

I think the setup sucks. Every time I try and use this 530 I have to make adjustments. Then I try and give a review and I can’t because of errors.
