The G3 glue issues still exist

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this product from G3 directly and had read the reviews and I was aware of the issues they have with glue on their skins and I can tell you right now the glue is horrible. I have used one pair of BCA Magic Carpets for over 3 years and never once had my skin fail let alone on the first day. My magic carpets have easily 250 plus days with multiple laps withing a tour on them. I wanted something with better glide which I got with the Scala Lt and the weight difference was a bonus but my fears were answered on my first tour with the Scala LT. On my third lap of the day one of my skins came right of my ski no matter how much I rubbed it and I even warmed it in my jacket. So if you want your tour ruined buy these otherwise I would look else where for climbing skins.

    Great so far

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had great luck with these skins so far. The rigid plastic Scala tip connector works as advertised. improving glide when breaking trail and eliminating problems with snow buildup underneath the skin. It's such a simple idea that you can't help but wondering why nobody thought of it sooner.

Length-wise, these are sized so that the back 3-6" of your ski will have very little skin coverage. This may look alarming if you're used to full tip to tail coverage, but rest assured that it is by design. Almost all of your grip when skinning comes from the area directly underfoot, so eliminating some skin coverage from the tail does nothing to reduce grip and results in significant weight savings.

I spoke to our local G3 rep the other day, and he said that if your skis are right in-between sizes (for example, a 184 is covered by a Medium or Long length) you can buy either size. In this case, the "Long" would give you more coverage on your tail, and the "Medium" would leave more base exposed at the tail - so either one will work just fine, it really boils down to personal preference.
