Why We Like The Fjallraven Kaipak 28L Backpack

The Fjallraven Kaipack 28 Backpack is a classic trekking pack with a functional, no-nonsense design and robust materials made to handle life on the trail. Perfect for shorter hikes and day trips, this pack features an extremely tough G-1000 Eco Heavy Duty fabric that is almost impossible to wear out, gives the pack a classic look, and is made with organic cotton and recycled polyester to make it less harmful to the environment. It's also waxed for water resistance, and there's an included rain cover in case you get caught in a serious downpour.

A detachable hip belt and sternum strap keep the pack secure and steady when we're hiking, and trekking pole attachment points give us a spot to store our poles when we don't need them. Compression straps squeeze in everything we need for the day, and multiple pockets help us stay organized.

Strength

I have put this pack through some serious abuse. I get around via bicycle and this pack has been on every grocery run for the past 2 years without issue. I’ve used it as a range bag as well, with close to 80lbs inside of it. It’s a tank. Shoulder straps are still going strong. I do wish the buckles were some type of metal though, a couple of the plastic ones have broke and need repair.

My favourite

My favourite Fjallraven all around, all year backpack for day trips. It is durable, low profile and fits my back very well. Better than Kaipak 38 (which I own as well) I would only change three things. Zippered front pocket could be made similar to Keb 52. With it is own space. Now when you put some gear inside the pocket it takes a bit space form the inside of the backpack. I guess it would be Kapiak 30 or so then. Loops for trekking poles could be a bit bigger so I could use them for ice axes as well. Now I attache a paracord to trekking pole lops (to make them a bit bigger) and use them with ice axes as well. Bigger top lid inside pocket. I like fixed brain, simple hip strap and clean minimalistic look.

Comfortable and spacious

I really like my Kaipak 28 as a daily user. I love that it is a top-loading pack, and the buckles are a great feature as well. I prefer this over a backpack that I have to zip up, because if I want to really stuff it full then it's a lot easier to close with a drawstring. It fits comfortably (I am a 5'3" 110 lb woman) but I wouldn't want anything larger for a day pack. It's also big enough that I could use it as an overnighter if needed. My only complaint is the lack of colour choices. The navy blue is a beautiful, dusty blue (lighter in person than in the photos) but I would have loved an olive or forest green colour like some of the other styles.
