True to size

I have had this hat for over 20 years. A gift from my wife. This has been through the desert southwest rafting, Maine kayaking, and the rain of the pacific northwest. It takes a beating. It has spent over 10 years at a weekly boy scout camp, I am known by the hat. It has been thrown into a tent or lean-to, flattened at the bottom of my pack and snowed on repeatedly. I have otter waxed it a couple times over the years and it still wears like almost new. Buy quality and it will serve you well thus being cheaper in the long run.

Great durable piece for wearing in the snow or rain. It's heavier than my river hat but if I needed to I would have no problem substituting this in for a trip or two. The chinstrap is why I bought this to replace my previous tin cloth; really helpful. Looks great and shows no signs of wear after three years of ownership, except a nice patina.

First off, this is a tin cloth hat which means oil finished cotton. It is made for areas like the Pacific Northwest where rain is more common than sunshine. Works great in the sun, but it’s first and foremost for working in the rain. My noggin measured at 70in which I figured I could fit in a large after looking at the size chart. Ended up having to make an exchange for the xl and it fits great. Definitely would recommend this hat.

Good Product... Mediocre Build/Quality

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The Hat looks awesome in person. I took it on a trip to Australia and the leather piece that wraps around the base of the hat is completely coming off. It is connected with glue.... instead of being sewed on. Now I have to hot glue it back on every time I fold it and pack it somewhere. For a hat that is $70, you would expect a little more. The hat is also very tight fitting and I ordered a large...so maybe go a size up....

The Perfect Adventure Hat

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I was looking for a hat I could use in the middle of summer in Moab, and this hat did not disappoint! The tin cloth breathes well, the hat has a very snug fit (I got an XL) and the brim is wide and shady!

Great Hat

Well made, classic style, and keeps the sun off your face. What more could you ask? I use mine for working in the yard and camping. Very nice hat, you will not be disappointed.

Great hat for the outdoors

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The brim is made out of a stiff construction, so it feels a little tight until it gets broken in. Great construction.

Now my boss calls me 'dundee'

I have a big head so I ordered the XL after seeing other commenters say that it fits small. The hat was still so tight that it gave me a headache! However, I stretched it out for a few days and now it fits perfectly. I'm a geologist and I wear this hat every day in the mojave sun. I love it and expect it to last a lifetime.

Not sure about the fit...

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I echo what the last person said: hat way too small for a medium so had to return it. Too bad because it's a well-made hat.

Wish It Fit

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

The hat arrived today and although size Medium (I measure 7 1/8) it was like a toy hat on top of my head. Way too small. Really sturdy great hat but I think I might look for another hat with a better fit instead of trying a different size. Nice wide brim that pretty much molds to shape.

Super tough

Really durable well made hat, not breathable but I know it will last me a lifetime

Filson Quality

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Great hat made of the heavy Tin cloth material. Brim's solid and construction fits the Filson name, so I expect it to last quite awhile. As the previous review states, it doesn't breath very well so it's a bit warm in the summer sun.

How packable is this hat? Can I shove it in a bag or roll it and have it keep shape?

Filson bush hat

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Great hat that lives up to the Filson name. Perfect for any outdoor activity. Ventilation isn't great, and wouldn't recommend on a hot/humid summer day. Solid brim and doesn't flop around in the wind.

Is this waterproof or made with goretex?

Hey John! So, they are not made of Gore-tex, but just because they aren't doesn't mean they aren't waterproof! That oil-finished tin cloth is really amazing at keeping out the rain, as well as the dirt. There is a really good video on Filson's website about it if you want to learn more! https://www.filson.com/tin-cloth.html# Let me know if you have any other questions, I would for sure love to help!

does this hat run true to size ?

Hey Olivia - Filson hats tend to run to true to size, including the Tin Cloth Bush Hat. I am an XL in most helmets, hats and that is what fit me best in this hat too.
