X5 Artica Cycling Shoe

When Old Man Winter is knocking at your door its best not to take his threats lightly. That isn't to stay that you should settle into the sofa with a cup of tea and binge watch your latest go-to series, but rather, pack on your best winter gear and meet him head on as you rocket down sparsely populated trails and crush frost coated climbs. The Fi'zi:k X5 Artica Cycling Shoes make the perfect addition to winter ready kit when you're ready to brave the cold, arming you with battle-ready winter protection for fat biking extravaganzas, or just extra-chilly trail days, thanks to its fully waterproof uppers that insulate you, and beefy lugged tread that keeps you from sliding out on ice patches on foot.

The X5 Artica's unique design combines an elite Fi'zi:k shoe fit with two layer technology to ensure total winter warmth. The inner layer insulates, and snugly secures your foot with a speed lace that wraps around you to provide an accurate and precise fit, giving you total support on the bike. The outer layer of the shoe is crafted from a Microtex reinforced shell that is seamlessly bonded to the inner, keeping the shoes low-profile while offering robust protection. A waterproof and breathable membrane wraps around the entire upper, making sure moisture can't permeate, but sweat can be wisked away, preventing cold, wet feet while you ride.

We all prefer to max out our trail miles on bike, but never the less encounter stretches of dirt that are best hiked — especially in icy winter conditions, and the Artica does its best to make sure your footing stays sure on particularly treacherous sections of trail. Beefy lugs grip ice, sand, and mud to keep you secure, and spikes can be mounted at the toe if you're in need of a little bit more to keep you confident through the elements. The outsole itself is built from carbon reinforced nylon, designed for stiffness on the bike that maximizes your power transfer, and just a touch of flex when you're off, allowing torsional flex that keeps your gait natural on foot. The inside uses Fi'zi:k's winter edition cycling insole, with a cozy fleece upper, and insulating aluminum foil on the underside to keep you warm through the coldest of days.

Seems sturdy without the bulk

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
46.5
Height:
5' 11"
Weight:
205

I wear a 12 shoe in most brands so the 46/12 is correct but if you wear heavy socks the toe box length might be too snug. I have the 46.5/12 1/2 due to fat biking winter use. The boot is narrow but seems flexible enough to stretch. The zipper is a bit tricky to point your toe down to align the teeth. Warmth? We will see. Waterproof? We will see. I had worn out my Lakes and couldn't find a big enough size in LG Klondike. 45NRTHs are too bulky for spring/fall use but I wanted more enduro/light boot for all 3 seasons and will go full pack boot on MTB flat pedals when temps really drop.

Love these boots!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
43

These are a great cycling shoe for muddy and wet conditions. I live it Portland, OR so we get rain most of the year. I've been wearing them consistently since Oct 2020 and they are holding up fine. The sole is pretty darn stiff and gives me a good amount of power. I'm usually a womens 10/10.5 or mens 9/9.5. Ordered a little big so I could wear thicker socks. Pair these with waterproof socks and you're ready to ride year round!

Not a great fit. Issue with Zipper.

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
46.5
Weight:
200

Based on sizing guide and reviews, I initially bought a 46 but then tried a 46.5. Both are listed as larger than a US12, which is my normal size. 46 usually works for me in cycling shoes. I am not convinced that the 46.5 was actually any bigger than the 46. Both have plenty of length but are too narrow. In spite of the extra length, my heel rubs uncomfortably in the right shoe. I do suspect that I have weird feet, since it is difficult to find shoes that fit well. But I think this will fit best on narrow feet. I haven't gone so far as installing cleats and riding outside since I suspect these will be going back. On one shoe, the zipper came apart (below the slider) the first time I went to take them off. It took about 10 minutes to get the zipper slider down and get the shoe off. Once I got it all the way down the teeth engaged again and it has worked fine since, but I'm concerned about future issues. Not having ridden in real conditions, I can't really comment on that, but they do not make my feet too warm to wear in the house with winter wool socks. I fear they wouldn't be as warm as advertised. Writing this review helped me decide to return them and go a different direction.

Bothersome Tongue on Shoe - Defect?

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Hi! Looked at the reviews for these and everything seemed super great, until try on. The tongue on the shoe moves around constantly, chafing your ankle and it's incredibly bothersome, to the point that you can't wear them. You wouldn't know this just by trying them on, so you have to ride in them, which is unfortunate because then you can't get a full refund. Wouldn't recommend.
