A rainbow of golds and browns.

You learned a lot of things from your grandfather: like what kind of fly to tie or how to keep those covert, family fishing holes a true blue secret. However, perhaps the most important concept he taught you was how to spot a quality rod and reel when you see it—sort of like the Fenwick Eagle Medalist Complete 4-Piece Outfit. Built for anglers of all levels, the Eagle Medalist has a medium, fast-action and comes fully equipped with a quality cork handle and lightweight carbon reel seat while the Pflueger medalist reel is pre-spooled, complete with weight forward fly line and tapered leader—which ultimately loads the rod easily, so you can spend less time pokey-ing around like you're searching for a needle in a haystack and focus more on what you actually hiked up and over the hill to do.

    Great rod-med action

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The best part of this package is the rod. It has great flow and is a medium action that is forgiving for a beginner and yet sensitive and responsive for an experienced fly fisher.
Reel is okay, but not so impressed by the line included.

    Great Setup, Great Value

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is my first flyrod setup (although I have been fishing for some time), and I love this setup. The package comes complete with just about everything you need, short of a box full of flies. The medium/fast action rod is forgiving for beginners, and gives room to progress as skills improve. The medalist reel is a tried and tested classic, and there is not much better than the sound of the click and pawl reel when a fish takes off with your fly. Overall, hard to beat the value you get with the Fenwick Eagle Medalist setup, whether you are a beginner, or a seasoned vet wanting to add another complete setup to your quiver.

    Unanswered Question

How much does this entire package weight and what is the total length of the case. Needing dimensions for my backpack trio I'm about to head out on.

Other than the fact it is 5wt, forward, tapered line, what backing and fly line come loaded on this outfit out of the box? Would you replace it with anything for both?
If so, what would you recommend?

Hey Rollingfox! Emory your personal gear head here. I am pretty sure it just comes loaded with generic 20lb dacron backing and a generic WF 5 floating line. Nothing brand specific. I am contacting Fenwick and Pfleuger and will let you know what they tell me. I would try the line out when you get the set up and see how it casts/performs and go from there. Based on that I can recommend a replacement line, if or when you are ready to replace it. Talk to you soon!
