Celebrate International Women’s Day With SheJumps

Join Get the Girls Out!, March 5-7, 2021

This International Women’s Day, the nonprofit SheJumps is inviting women and girls all over the world to join in a first-ever, global “Get the Girls Out!” initiative. From March 5-7, 2021 (the weekend before International Women’s Day), anyone can join this event from anywhere. All you need is a phone and to be outside, whether that’s on skis, on the trail, or at a park. And by registering, you’re automatically entered to win prizes from SheJumps’ partners.

The theme for International Women’s Day this year is “Choose to Challenge,” which speaks to both the spirit of Get the Girls Out!, as well as resonates with the gender inequities still present today, including in the outdoors. For example, women’s participation in skiing has only grown by 1% since the 1997-1998 ski season, according to the National Ski Area Association.

How to Participate in Get the Girls Out!

Get the Girls Out! is a virtual scavenger hunt with prizes. Each mission celebrates the unique reasons why we always turn to nature to be renewed. Here’s how to participate:

  1. Register for the event.
  2. Look for an email with the details to play.
  3. Download the Goosechase app.
  4. Enter the game code.
  5. Complete missions on the Goosechase app.
  6. Enjoy the outdoors and enter to win prizes!

Wondering who can participate? SheJumps is an inclusive organization, and welcomes all women and girls (transgender and cisgender) as well as non-binary people who identify with the women’s community.

The SheJumps Story

Since 2007, SheJumps has been working to get more women and girls participating in outdoor activities. For the organization, jumping is a metaphor and the outdoors is a blank canvas where you can build skills to create safe, fun, and meaningful adventures. “Nature is where we go to become who we are meant to be,” says SheJumps board member and clinical psychologist Dr. Sara Boilen.

Even if nature is where we belong, SheJumps recognizes that there are many barriers to the outdoors, and that not all are the same. Improving access to outdoor activities and fostering more female leaders—especially among Women of Color—begins with mentorship. These relationships are key to helping women feel more self-sufficient outside.

That’s why SheJumps provides access points for all women and girls—regardless of background, age, race, and ability—to find belonging in the outdoors. Whether it’s a Snowpack Scholarship for avalanche education (at least half of which go to Women of Color), a free “Getting Started” event, or a Micro Ventures educational blog post, SheJumps is making the outdoors a less intimidating, more inclusive place.
