    Mountainous minimalism.

A lot of your gear changes as you summit the same mountain in different seasons. Instead of backcountry skis, you have climbing shoes; instead of a ski jacket, you climb in an ultralight alpine shell. Nearly everything changes, except for Exped's Serac 35 Backpack. Exped equipped this minimalist-minded pack for four-season versatility, including a handy ski attachment system that lets you clip climbing gear instead. The watertight roll-top closure compliments the weatherproof material, and the top strap secures climbing ropes. There's a secondary side access so you can pull layers out on the approach, and the front pocket is just snug enough for avalanche gear.

I liked the design, not the execution

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this pack as my summit pack for a trip to Ecuador to climb a couple volcanoes. I picked it because it came in a size small, was waterproof, the right volume, had ice axe loops and daisy chains, was packable and had a waist belt. I broke one of the carabiners on the top closure before the first summit, and I'm not rough on gear. And all the buckles let webbing slip, so it was impossible to keep the waist belt and should straps adjusted. I would not buy this pack again, and will think twice about buying other Exped products in the future.
