The EC90 SL Stem is one of the lightest on the market, but that's a pleasant by-product of Easton's design principles. They set out to produce a stem that can handle the rigors of CX and XC racing. And, even after focusing on strength, this sculpted carbon stem just happens to be light enough for today's ultra-light road bikes.

This makes the EC90 SL a perfect choice for broken pavement, gravel roads, and cobblestone-strewn race courses. Easton uses the same TaperWall carbon construction as its highly respected handlebars. This is not just more material in some areas for strength and less in other zones for weight reduction. It promises a void-free, perfectly clean carbon laminate throughout -- which is the only way to avoid fracturing caused by faulty carbon construction.

Along with TaperWall, Easton adds Top Lock, which immobilizes the face plate against the surface of the stem once the top two titanium faceplate bolts are threaded and torqued properly. It's designed this way so that the stem cannot place uneven pressure on the handlebar. To finish the installation procedure, simply torque the bottom two bolts to spec.

An even distribution of loads to the handlebar is one advantage of Top Lock, another is the faceplate cannot flex around or vibrate when you ride over rough roads. A faceplate that doesn't vibrate cannot wear against the handlebars -- which greatly reduces the chance of weakening your favorite carbon bars.

The Easton EC90 SL Stem is made of Easton Carbon and uses titanium hardware for the faceplate and steerer clamp. It's available in lengths from 80-130mm in 10mm increments. It's sized for 1-1/8" steerer tubes and has an oversized 31.8mm bar clamp diameter and 0° rise. It comes in a Matte Carbon finish.

    • Easton's lightest stem available built to endure XC and CX racing
    • Carbon fiber is insanely strong and only tips scale at 115 grams
    • TaperWall tech delivers strong, clean, and void-free laminate
    • DST and Top-Lock faceplate maximize the handlebar-to-stem interface

    Lovely stem

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Well designed stem. I have two of these now an 80mm 0 degree and a 90mm 10 degree. CC sells both 0 and 10 degree versions, so make sure you get the right one.

If you want a carbon stem these are very nice. They are easy to install and look fantastic. They toplock system makes it easy to get a good fit and I have no concerns about the single bolt in the back. The stem is a true 40mm stack (not 35mm like FSA stems) so you need 45mm min of exposed stem to install correctly.

If you generically want a stem, an alloy stem definitely gives you more bang for the buck. I do however feel like this carbon stem adds to the smoothness of the ride over the rough stuff compared to the EA90 on a carbon bike, fork, bar combo; but its slight and could be all in my head--but FWIW I prefer the EC90 SL.

    Absolute Beauty

Fabulous stem - light enough, meticulously manufactured, stiff, and beautiful. I get compliments on it all the time. The TopLock concept takes some time to wrap your head around (top of the faceplate is flush, bottom leaves a small gap) but so far no issues. Ti hardware is a nice touch, so is the "friction paste" type coating at the bar interface. Sure, there are lighter AL stems out there, but none as stunning as this one.

    Not as Described

This does NOT have a 10 degree rise. It is zero.
