Lightweight, versatile, and engineered to take you up.
When light and fast are a necessity to tackling your objective, look to the Men's Traverse Hybrid Primaloft Insulated Jacket from Dynafit. The Traverse is made with a lightweight nylon fabric that's been treated with water-repellent finish on the chest and Primaloft Gold synthetic insulation to keep your torso warm when things get chilly. The arms are composed of a durable stretch nylon that lets you cool down and won't rip easily if it gets snagged on a tree branch on the way down. Elastic cuffs help to seal out the elements, while the zippered chest pocket lets you stow the jacket inside itself if you start to overheat.

Incredible All-in-one jacket
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Medium
I was a little apprehensive about buying this jacket since I have similar ones, but I have not been disappointed in the least. This jacket is essentially a hybrid between softshell jackets and synthetic insulated jackets. Its is very lightweight and comfortable. The arms are a little long, but that is for the thumb holes.
I first used this jacket extensively on a complete traverse of Switchback, Martin, Cheops, and Bigelow peaks of the Sawtooth-Chelan Wilderness in the North Cascades of WA. It was many hours of chossy class 2 and 3 in the standard sleet, hail, and snow of the North Cascades. I wore this jacket the entire time and it beaded off sleet, blocked wind, breathed on hard pushes, and kept me warm enough to chill at each summit for 10 minutes or so without needing another layer. I have never had another layer do all those things so well.
Not a specialty item, but can take so many different conditions (in moderation) well. Water resistant like a softshell, breathable like a softshell, but a little extra insulation. Highly recommend for high output activities (especially in wetter climates) below 40 degrees.
What a Surprise
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

As a runner my favorite outdoor piece is the Patagonia Houdini. I never thought I could have feelings for another jacket like I do for the Houdini, but I do. I love this jacket- ha. The sleeve material is smooth, insulated chest isn't too thick, and the hood is perfect. I have wore it skiing under a shell and have wore it running - super versatile. I wish they had an XS.. At 5'-10" 140 the jacket is long in the sleeves and waist.
