Best Pair Of Pants I Have Ever Owned
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Large
- Height: 6'3"
- Weight: 195lbs
I purchased these pants last week with the intention of using them specifically in the back country. This past Saturday I got out for a tour and was really impressed with the light weight, the ability to breath and comfortable fit. On Sunday afternoon I rode the lifts during a good storm (wind and snow). The intent was to test the jacket against harsh conditions. To my surprise the they worked great! Much warmer than I anticipated. The water proofing was excellent as was the protection from the wind. I did wear a light pair of underwear for warmth. Highly recommend these pants!
How does the adjustable hem work on these pants?
How do these pants differ from the TLT, the Mercury or the Vulcan Windstopper?
I have a pair of Black Diamond Dawn Patrol pants and the fit is terrible! I am looking to replace them with a breathable, comfortable pant for touring.
The TLT is a lightweight, ski mountaineering pant. It has an athletic cut to it. Expect the fit to be more what you would see in a mountaineering pant. It does not have a ski gator. It does have a scuff guard. It can be worn year round in the mountains.
The Mercury pant is a lightweight, highly breathable touring/backcountry ski pant. It is a little bit more on the athletic side, but not tight. I would describe the fit as more classical. It has gator, scuff guards, can wear a belt or suspenders, super stretchy. Overall, it is the best seller. They also have side zips for ventilation.
The Vulcan pants are the loosest of the bunch. It is designed to be for the backcountry user who gets cold more and appreciates a lightweight fleece backer along with a membrane to block wind and water. They have a straighter leg, a bit more youthful in the fit. Features include a cargo pocket on each leg with magnetic snaps, ventilation side zips, wind proof, warm, scuff guard, and gators.
If you like the looser fit of the Vulcan, check out the Dynafit Aeon. It has a similar fit, but a simpler look. It doesn't have the membrane if you run hot. It is a good option for a more youthful, loose look without overheating.
The Chugach pant is one of the favorites. It is a hybrid pant. In areas that have high contact with the snow, like butt and the thighs, it has seam taped wind stopper, but areas that use more ventilation and breathability like around the waist, behind the knees and hamstrings, it is a light weight softshell that is highly breathable. It also has side zip ventilation, a beacon pocket on the thigh with clip, ability to take a suspender or belt. It also has the looser overall fit with a straighter leg similar to the Aeon.
