Why We Like The Freescape Pro SL 38L+ Backpack

When it comes to fast-and-light overnighters, technical ascents in the alpine, or a bit of both, we call on the Deuter Freescape Pro 38+ SL Backpack to carry our gear. Don’t be fooled by its minimalist exterior—the Freescape is an extremely versatile pack well-equipped to tackle everything from backcountry ski and splitboard objectives to modern alpinism and more traditional mountaineering. The padded shoulder straps and hip belt help keep everything comfortable when fully loaded with gear, and a frame sheet further increases support when saddled with a heavy load. When venturing into the backcountry for fresh tracks, we throw avalanche safety gear in the front pocket, and when we head out ice climbing, we throw a set of ice tools in the front straps and lash a rope to the top of the pack via the dedicated rope-carry strap. Simply put, this pack does it all.

Perfect for 1 day mountaineering

I've used it several times

I bought this as my dedicated bag for 1 day mountaineering objectives. So far I’ve used it on Mount Saint Helens and other snow hikes. The access from the back is a game changer, I can put my heavy stuff at the bottom even if I may need it immediately because I can easily get to it. The size is great so I’m able to bring everything I need plus extras. I tried Deuters 28L version and it was too small for my liking. The outside straps are good for holding crampons or snowshoes. The front pocket fits a whole shovel and probe. And the brain has lots of room for gloves, snacks, and essentials. It may be possible to use this as an overnight bag but it’d be tight with my current set up. The only downside is the back length is not adjustable and it’s a little long for my torso but I just hike it up on my hips and cinch everything down tight. I am 5’4 though so I have a smaller torso.
