When other hikers start turning back, you keep going strong in comfort with the help of the Darn Tough Mountaineering Over-The-Calf Extra Cushion Sock. This sock features a heavyweight merino wool blend and thick cushioning to help you laugh in the face of icy winds, sideways sleet, and treacherous terrain.

Unlike other socks built for extreme weather, this one features Darn Tough's streamlined performance fit so it still fits comfortably in your boot. This sock also features Darn Tough's thickest, highest-density cushioning to ease impacts from rugged terrain and ease the burden of fully-loaded packs.

Great sock for all your needs

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Fit:
Runs large
Size Bought
Medium
Height
5` 7"
Weight
155 lbs

I originally bought these socks with the intent of using them for back country skiing and mountaineering, but because of how nice these socks are I've been wearing them almost every day. They performed very well at 35 degrees while crosscounty skiing, flexed well, kept my feet warm but not toasting, and the best part, No smell whatsoever. I've worn these without washing them almost consistently for about 6 days without smell (gross, I know). About the only complaint I could come up with is the fit of these socks. I'm about a 8.5 men's and ordered medium which says it covers feet sized 8 to 9.5 . There's a noticable amount of extra sock at the end. I can normally pull the sock up a little higher but then the heel part doesn't sit quite right. It also occasionally slides down my shins but these are very picky things and I normally don't notice these things much throughout the day. If you think you may be bothered by this then I'd maybe recommend you buy a size down if you are like me at the middle to lower range of your suggested size. All in all this is a great sock and I will be wearing these a lot. I can't comment on durability yet since it has only been a week since I got them but considering they have a lifetime no questions asked warray, I'm not too concerned. I will update this review after I really get some use into these.

Declining quality

My second pair of Darn Tough OTC Mountaineering socks and the quality has declined dramatically. The first pair has a much thicker foot sole which is entirely red. These are red on the toe and heel and are so thin that it affects boot sizing. My first pair weighs 175 grams after many washings. The new pair weighs only 160 grams after the first wash.

So Warm

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These Darn Tough Mountaineering socks are insanely warm and thick. They also come all the way up to just about the knee. Great with any boot, and they provide extreme comfort as well. I love these for the winter months, and they also run very true to size. Lastly, I would also like to give them a go in the crew height: https://www.backcountry.com/darn-tough-mountaineering-extra-cushion-micro-crew-socks-mens?rr=t

Long and Warm

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Used these at the USMC Mountain Warfare Training Center. They perform wonderful in single digit to 50 degree temps. The long length ensures they don't fall down. Nice and thick with good cushioning. As with all Darn Tough socks they will wear quite well when compared to other brands IMH experience.

Quality sock

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Needed some thick socks for snowboarding since my feet are super skinny. These fill in my boots nicely and seem like they will last a long time with heavy use.

Excellent Large Sock

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Darn Tough Socks are the only sock that I have found to fit my size 18 foot (XXL size) without feeling like my toes are compressed or that I am stretching the sock out every time I wear them. This "over the calf" sock is really that tall. Even with my 38" inseam these socks come up to the base of my knee. So far so good as far as wear goes, while I haven't had them for very long the quality is top notch and even if I do wear them out with the lifetime warranty I will only have to buy the socks once.
