    Mountain Light Boot

Unsurpassed craftsmanship, attention to detail, and superior materials are what make a Danner boot a Danner boot. The Women's Mountain Light Boot uses that ultimate quality to pay homage to the iconic hiking boot styles that Danner designed in the early 1970s, and it's made in Portland, Oregon to ensure the utmost in quality.

There are, however, a few modern upgrades that you'll no doubt appreciate. The boot starts out with an incredibly durable one-piece leather upper, lined with a Dri-Lex waterproof liner for the ultimate in extreme-weather protection. The speed hook laces ensure you can get a good, snug fit, even with gloves on or cold hands. The full-length fiberglass shank creates an supportive platform that is plenty stable for you to carry heavy backpack loads, especially if you're planning to be out for multiple days on end. The Vibram Kletterlift outsole offers incredible shock absorption and traction on the toughest terrain.

    Soles were defective.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Giving a heads up that my Mountain Light soles were defective. Danner acknowledged this in an email exchange and then offered I buy another pair at a discount. This happened at less than two years of mild use. The sole replacement is $130 plus shipping. That would have made for an over $500 investment. My last pair of $120 Dr. Martens went five years without a hitch!!

    Soles were defective.

Should have bought them years ago!

I finally decided to buy these boots. I've read so many mixed reviews about them over the years and so I have always been hesitant to do so. I have been in the market for a new pair of hikers and I bought the Danner Jag boot (seemed like a sweet deal) and I was really disappointed when they came. I just felt they looked silly and so I returned them and purchased the Mountain Lights instead b/c that is what I really wanted. Overall, these boots are great. They are very different than a typical hiker, but that is what I like most about them!! They are retro, classic and I truly feel I will have these for a really long time and that is why they are worth the investment.

There is a lot of debate about the sizing and so it can be kind of confusing. For reference, I am a 6.5/7 in most shoes - and I usually buy a 7 in my hikers. I have a 'thin' foot (not narrow) which means that just about everything about my foot is really thin and bony so I tend to buy my shoes a little more snug for that reason. After much debate, I bought the 6.5 and I would say they are perfect for my feet. If you are between sizes but your foot is a little more 'meaty' I would recommend the bigger size. If your foot is like mine, I would suggest the half-size down. Hope that helps.

As for breaking them in. Yes, you need to break them in. They are stiff. I live in an old loft apartment building so the best way I break in any hiker is by climbing up/down the 10 flight of stairs with my boots on. It is the best way to break-in shoes/boots - it always works. I do have a little rubbing on my back heel, but I used the surgeons knot to help correct that during the break-in and it seems to be helping with the rubbing that was happening. But only time and wear will help overall. I can already tell, once these boots are broken-in completely, they will be awesome.

If you want these, just buy them!!! You're welcome :)

      Everything I always dreamed of

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am so excited to get these boots into the Wind Rivers this summer. My first impression was that they were super comfy and I couldn't believe how light they were! Love that they provide style and function. I normally wear a size 7.5 in most shoes. The 7.0s fit absolutely perfect, with room for thick socks.

      Huge Brownie Points

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Bought these a gift and there has been nothing but praise for them. As most of the posts here say you do want to drop half a size. They broke in easily and I did buy the cleaner as well as the conditioner to aid in the lifespan of them.

      Great Boots

Got these for my wife and she loves them. Great fit, very durable, and pretty stylish. The breathability is great, and the traction keeps her feet stuck to the trail when needed. A bit bulky, but that's what we were looking for. Great stuff!

      Wasn’t sure at first

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

After doing a bit of research on these boots I was sure they were the ones. After reading the reviews on sizing I wasn’t quite sure which size to order. I am an 8.5 usually but sometimes a 9 so I figured the 8.5 would be perfect! These shoes definitely run large. I ended up exchanging them for an 8. Now they fit perfect! I wore them up to Mt. Rainier last weekend and they were very supportive, and the tread is wonderful. I took them through the snow and they kept my feet warm and dry. I did notice the same problem others talked about, the did seem to rub on the back of my ankles a bit and feel quite uncomfortable but after an hour or so they had already felt like they were loosening up and molding to my feet. Like any leather boots they take a while to break in (moleskin will be your bff at first) but I would recommend!

      girlfriend loves it

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

this is the second pair my girlfriend has had in a few years and she loves how comfy they are and how durable they are hiking here in the northwest. she cant wait to break them in while backpacking

      Only go Danner!

My wife was searching for good hiking boots for years and we finally did we went danner and I don’t think we can ever go back!! Amazing comfort, light weight, they mold to your foot, and the style is classic!! So happy we finally did it!! Worth the investment.

        Awesome pair of women's boots

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

The Vibram sole offers good traction. These boots offer plenty of support. They are recraftable (Danner will resole them for you instead of making you buy a whole new pair of boots). And most importantly, they are super cute.

Personally, I prefer buying an expensive pair of boots that will last you a lifetime instead of choosing cheaper boots and having to buy a new pair every few years.

If it's good enough for Reese Witherspoon, it's good enough for my wife.

        Awesome pair of women's boots

        Very Best Boots

THESE BOOTS ARE SO COMFORTABLE> like seriously SO SO comfortable. They mold to your feet. You can wear them anywhere but are amazing on hikes. I use them for everything. I have had them for 3 years now and seriously the quality has held up amazing!! Best boots I have owned!

        Worth It!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: Runs large
        • Size Bought: 7.5
        • Height: 5'8"
        • Weight: 135lbs

I did my research before investing in these, and they are definitely a new favorite!

I did, as other reviewers mention, size down from my usual 8 to a 7.5. This was the right call as they fit great. A gearhead actually called me the evening of my purchase to ask about my fit/sizing, etc., which was awesome. It's hard to find that kind of customer service.

Anyway, I recommend thick, tall socks til they're broken in. They will, otherwise, wear your heels raw. Mine are broken in after a week's worth of daily 5-mile hikes.

I'm super happy with my purchase, and with Backcountry's customer service. Highly reccommend, all around.

        OG Hiking Boots

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: 8
        • Height: 5'8"
        • Weight: 160lbs

I've wanted this particular pair of Danners for years and when I forgot to throw my hiking boots into my things during a cross country move, it was the perfect opportunity to snag the pair that I've always wanted. I've been on two moderate hikes with these boots and true to most leather boots, they are definitely going to need to be broken in. I recommend wearing pretty thick socks, because I wore moderately thick cotton socks and my ankles are torn apart after the first hike. I can't wait to take these boots on my hikes!

        Classic

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
        • Fit: Runs large

Classic looks, with modern functionality. Who could ask for more?! The total leather construction on these boots ensures a personalized fit after a break in period, as well as being waterproof. The sole on the Portland is nice and rugged too. These are surprisingly lightweight despite their burly construction, I'd recommend these boots to any lady looking for a serious backpacking boot, willing to put up with an adjustment period but wanting that classic look.
I'd recommend sizing down one size as well.

        Unanswered Question

I typically wear a size 7.5. I have a friend that bought these in a size 8 and I tried them on. They were so tight along the sides of my feet (width); I have a pretty wide foot (I cannot wear the Soloman Speedcross if that is any indication on the width of my feet). What size should I get? When I tried her shoes on in the size 8 they seemed very narrow but I'm reading conflicting reviews now...
