Why We Like The Danner Crag Rat Hiking Boot

The Danner Crag Rat Men's Hiking Boot isn't at home until it's miles from anywhere, marching through mud, rallying over rocks, or stomping through snow. The whole package is built on top of a deep-lugged Vibram Tsavo outsole, designed to grip all sorts of rugged terrain and deliver the confidence to take the Crag Rat almost anywhere. On top of the sole, a PU footbed, molded PU midsole, and stiff nylon shank provide plenty of support and protection against the sharp rocks and tough terrain that are the Crag Rat's preferred environments. The Crag Rat is also built with a PU-and-Pebax Dynamic Response stability system, which provides increased stiffness, lateral stability, and energy return, so we can cover more ground with less pain and effort. Finally, the supple but rugged full-grain leather upper is lined with a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX membrane, which keeps feet dry when marching through rainy, muddy, or snowy conditions on the way to the next campsite.

I love this Boot!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Best boot I've ever had in term of fit and finish. I have yet to give it an endurance rating as I just began to wear them. I bought 8 medium and I normally wear a 7.5. Love this fit. At first glance it was easy to see the Genius behind the construction of the Tongue. I've read so many complaints about how the tongue was too large and how bad it hurt people's feet. The first observation was that the tongue is an Exterior Tongue. It was made to be placed under the laces but Not under the holes like your tennis shoe!! This provides superior water shedding and added comfort across the top of your foot. What I don't understand is why soo many folks missed this! Carry On and Happy trails!!

Not mind-blowing, but very, very good.

I do really like these. I swear by the Crater Rims, which I think everyone thinks of as the sibling to the Crag Rats. These feel like more of an every day boot - they're more flexible, they're softer, they seem to breathe a little better (though that may be my imagination). There are some common complaints out there that show up over and over in reviews. The tongue is too big, but I feel like that's been done to provide some padding and structure for the front of your boot. It breaks in fast and stops being a problem. The lacing system isn't super great, but I wouldn't call it bad. You end up spending slightly longer to get them laced up, but it's really fine. I saw that a lot of people said they were too narrow but I don't think so. They're more snug than other boots, but I don't at all feel like the sizing is off or anything. Right now, my suspicion is that the snugness is to do with the leather being new. I do feel like it's odd how these are categorized (on Backcountry, on Danner's site, pretty much everywhere) as backpacking boots. I feel like backpacking boots, at least the ones I've learned I prefer, are so much more rigid - and stable as a consequence. If the Crag Rats weren't marketed that way, it would never occur to me that anyone would opt to use them that way. These are really comfortable and I think they're going to break in really nicely. They feel tough and like they'll put up with a decent amount of use/abuse/wear/tear. I'm happy with them, glad I picked them up.
