    Get after it.

If you're only going to have one backcountry touring pack, you'd be wise to make it the Dakine Poacher RAS 36L Pack. It's spacious enough to hold a full day's touring kit, but it's still compact and close-fitting to allow for smooth, unburdened descents.

The main compartment offers room for lunch and extra layers, and the back panel access lets you reach what you need without unloading the entire pack. Meanwhile, an avy tool-specific pocket allows quick access to your probe and shovel, in case the worst happens. A padded hipbelt keeps the pack from shifting around while you ride, and the breathable back panel helps keep your back from getting soaked with sweat.

This pack is compatible with Mammut's Removable Airbag 3.0 System (sold separately), which inflates in seconds to prevent you from getting buried in the event of an avalanche. And if you plan on getting into some seriously technical terrain, this pack is also compatible with Dakine's Impact Spine Protector (also sold separately), because you can never take safety too seriously.

    • Versatile pack for any backcountry touring mission
    • Compatible with Mammut Removable Airbag System (not included)
    • Ski and snowboard carry options
    • Quick-access avy tool main compartment
    • Deployable helmet carry stows your brain bucket
    • Quick draw ice axe loop for technical ascents
    • Compatible with DK Impact Spine Protector (not included)
    • Breathable back panel and hip belt for secure, comfy fit
    • Item #DAK00TX

    Good for school...not skiing

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I purchased this pack a few months in October of 2017 for the upcoming ski season. I thought it had everything I desired on a ski pack for my touring purposes. However, after utilizing the pack for maybe the 7th time I discovered two tears in the fabric on the back side of the pack going all the through to the snow tool compartment. This had happened after I was carrying my skis in the proper diagonal configuration which it was clearly made to be able to handle. I have not even abused this pack yet; the season was just starting so it was all short trips and carrying not much gear. This is not the quality of material I have come to expect from Dakine and it is extremely disappointing that even after multiple conversations with them they refused to cover any of the damages. I take care of my equipment and I expect a pack to last for years - I still have a Dakine school backpack from 11 years ago that I use. Dakine still expects their packs to last for years, realistically this isn’t the case. It has prompted me to look elsewhere for a snowsports backpack made of higher quality material. This is disappointing and has cost me a fair amount of money for only a few uses, and that shouldn’t be the case. I expect better from Dakine and will now be looking to Ortovox or BCA for gear I can rely on.

    Nice little pack

I bought this for my girlfriend because she had the RAS system that needed a home. She wished it was a little bigger, but it works for a day to day avy pack. The wire frame sucked so we pulled it out and now the pack fits a lot better and is more comfortable.

    Unanswered Question

How does the ice axe loop work?
Had a look at one of these in person but it wasn’t clear how the ice axe loop worked? Are you meant to use he same loop as the diaganol ski carry working on the basis you wouldn’t use both at the same time? Is there a hidden loop I couldn’t find?
