Nice glove for mid-range winter temps.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Being up here in Rochester, NY where the winters are long and hard I was looking to up my game a bit on gloves. I was looking at other gloves when I spotted the DAKINE Phantom Glove on sale for 25% off.

My initial impression when they arrived was how stylish these gloves are. That is something I was looking for since I’ll be wearing them mostly in a city/urban environment. They are also very light weight. The outside stitching is very good as well.

These gloves aren’t very stiff and broke in quickly. The leather is very smooth and soft.

They do run small in my opinion. I got excellent pre-sale support from Dennis and he recommended I go with a Large even though according to the size chart I should be at a medium. My hand size is 8-1/4" circumference and 8" long from tip to wrist.

Even with the larger size it's a slight struggle to get the gloves on and off because the cuff opening is narrow. Once I had them on, there was plenty of room in the fingers but the back side where the knuckles are feels a little tight. Trying them on with a light pair of liners was doable, but very tight all around.

DAKINE rates their winter gloves on a scale from 1 to 5 with 5 being the warmest. The Phantom Gloves rate from 2.5 – 3.5 and list in their temperature range of -10 to 20 degrees F. For comparison their Kodiak GORE-TEX Glove is rated a 5 for temperatures -10 degrees F and below.

I got to try the DAKINE Phantom Glove out during the Polar Vertex that’s currently in effect. Outside temp was 10 degrees F with a wind chill of 4 degrees F while I was out. After about an hour I could feel my fingertips starting to tingle but the rest of my hand was okay. Wind was really biting and blowing snow but the gloves stayed dry. Even while clearing the snow off the car.

My only disappointment so far was that when applying the waterproofing to the gloves I started seeing the gloves color (black) come off on the towel immediately. I used Sno-Seal and not the Nikwax that came included.

Overall I’m happy with my purchase and would recommend these gloves as a mid-temp winter glove.

If I was going to be outside for long periods of time in temps below 20 degrees F I might look for something different. The DAKINE Phantom Glove has gr8t dexterity and I think I would lose that with a thicker glove.

    I love these gloves

When my favorite gloves (older dakine's) finally gave out I ordered these along with a few pairs of black diamond and outdoor research gloves. These were the most comfortable and seem to be the most durable as well. Keep in mind that I only have first impressions and have not put these through seasons of abuse. The only thing I'm slightly concerned with is how long the zipper will last. In my opinion they beat the BD gloves in every category (fit, comfort, durability). The OR gloves were similar in comfort and had better dexterity, however they did not seem as warm or durable. I would definitely recommend these to someone looking for an all leather ski/snowboard glove. For reference, the other gloves I was comparing these against were the BD spark pro, BD kingpin, and OR illuminator sensor.
