Be a control freak
No one really jumps for joy in anticipation of winter indoor training—it's monotonous, boring, and it's not possible to have the same quality of workout as outdoors. Right? The CycleOps PowerBeam Pro Bluetooth Smart trainer makes a mockery of traditional indoor workouts. It was designed for the most demanding riders on earth who want to make the most of every second spent indoors.
Starting with the most rudimentary functionality, the PowerBeam Pro Trainer is both foldable and portable. It's easy for one person to set the bike and with CycleOps' quick-cam locking mechanism, getting the bike in and out of the trainer is a fast process. Basically, all that you need to do is to position your rear axle to the mechanism and then turn a dial. Now we know that noise, especially if you are an apartment dweller, is an issue. You'll be pleased to know that the PowerBeam Pro is ranked as one of the quietest trainers in the CycleOps lineup. Furthermore, CycleOps states that the PowerBeam Pro is its most stable trainer, leaving you to live in the pain cave during heavy intervals. However, we recommend using the Climbing Riser Block if you intend on getting out of the saddle for any duration of time. And if your floors aren't particularly level, say when you've been relegated to the basement, the trainer features a single-leg leveling adjustment in order to compensate for uneven surfaces.
For the actual rolling function, CycleOps included its PowerTuned flywheel. This heavy wheel mimics the feel of rolling by optimizing inertial effect. What does this mean? Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. So, when force is typically applied to a common flywheel, resistance is felt, but dead weight creates dead spots in the wheel's motion. This means that the trainer feels more like you're pushing against a resistant cylinder than riding a bike. However, by precisely tuning the design of the flywheel, CycleOps has eliminated this feeling, and accordingly, it's created a proper, real-world feel. Additionally, the PowerBeam's roller is constructed from smooth, machined alloy that minimizes tire wear and slippage. You won't need to run a trainer-specific tire to prevent wear on your road tires.
Now that we've discussed the pure functionality of the PowerBeam Pro Bluetooth Smart, let's talk about what really makes this the trainer of the stars. Paired with PowerTap and Bluetooth technology, you are able to control the variables of training from 30 to 1000+ watts and slopes of up to 10% on the fly with the CycleOps Virtual Training software. Compatible devices include iPad 3 or higher, Android tablets with Jelly Bean 4.3 OS, or iPhone 4S or higher. With PowerAgent 7 software, all the tools to customize your workouts are right at your fingertips: Just select "Create Workout", enter a date, name, and description. Input your workout segments, which can be controlled by power range, power zone, slope, or target power. Workouts may be uploaded to the Joule GPS. Then you are ready to ride. When you are finished, full download capability allows you to analyze critical power, heart rate, cadence, speed, and detailed variable correlations. Using these key metrics, you can continuously create workouts that effectively address your training goals. With the PowerBeam Pro, you can be the control freak that your friends always said you were, and it'll pay off come springtime.
The PowerBeam Pro Bluetooth Smart is available in One size and in the color Black. Please note that while it will accept bikes with wheels up to 29inches, it will not accommodate rear axle spacing of 120mm. Sorry trackies, you'll have to pull out your freehub machine for this one.

- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Not sure why the other reviewer had issues. Mine set up fast and perfectly. I rode 350 miles and 17 rides later I can report no connectivity issues at all that was the fault of the Powerpro. I was surprised and delighted to find it accurate, smooth and easy to set up. I highly recommend it.
Bought the Powerbeam PRO Bluetooth for winter training. Also bought a bluetooth heart rate strap and an IPad handlebar holder to use with the trainer. Big mistake.
The trainer functioned fine for the first 5 or 6 rides then no longer would connect with my Ipad. I was told to change locations of my bike in case there was interference. Did not work. I called Cyclops and their tech support had me send them my unit and they sent me a new one. The new one did not work either.
They told me the original one checked out fine and sent that back to me. It worked for a few rides and then again would not work with my Ipad. The Bluetooth would show connected on the Ipad but no power data was supplied and the unit would not change resistance. I lost most of the winter training trying to get this to work and for the cost of it I was not able to buy something else. I want to be clear this is for the Bluetooth version, not the ANT which I do not have.
I just tried the trainer again today after several months and same results. I see this as a total waste of money, do not buy!
