- Q & A
Might be worth the hype
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: Runs small
- Size Bought: Small
I've known about CW-X for years now, and have never quite been able to trust that their stuff does what it says. After needing to replace my thin, stretched out ski baselayers though, I finally caved and decided to try these with the hopes of using them for winter running as well. After skiing in them for a day, I have to say I'm pretty happy so far. The material feels cold at first, but seemed to insulate pretty well while I skied. Not sure how they'll do on a colder day, but they were really breathable, which was a nice change.
Based on reviews, I sized up to a small, which I'm happy with. I think XS would've worked too, but I'd say go up if you're in doubt. If nothing else, it'll save you time when you're trying to wiggle into these things and get out the door. As for the compression's benefits, I'm still unsure, but it's certainly not hurting anything. Skiing and running in the cold often make my knees achy, and having some extra support felt nice.

I'll start by saying the design of these tights is incredible, and they provide awesome support for my creaky knees (several meniscus/MCL tears and frequent patella dislocations) while skiing, winter hiking, or cold runs.
However, the fit of these is pretty strange... I totally understand these are compression tights and will fit veeeery snugly, but both my roommate and I felt like they run a full size small. At 5'9" and 135lbs (28in waist, 35in hips), the size chart put me well within the size Small territorry. I couldn't even pull the waistband over my quads. Granted, I have typical skier quads and hips, but still. My roommate, who is 5'3" or so and around 100lbs could fit in them, though they were still quite tight. I'd recommend sizing up!
I can just barely fit in the Medium, and might consider snagging a large.
CW-X Stabilyx 3/4 (capri) tights
I just wore these in my half marathon and loved them! I wore them during my 12 miler and since it was cool today, I wore them for the half. It is the first colder half I have done without having IT band issues. I do not know if it is due to the tights or not, but they seemed to help. They are warm enough to wear in 40-50 degrees, any colder and I will wear the full length ones of the same design.
I wasn't sure of the size, so I chatted online with a rep from backcountry and he assured me the xs would work for me, and he was right, they do! (I just wouldn't want anyone watching me put them on :)
I have the 3/4 and the full length and love them. I would recommend them to anyone looking for cold weather gear.
Higher, faster, stronger!
Oh, yeah! Loving my tights. I'm using them for downhill skiing and I definitely feel the advantage of compression. My legs feel much less fatigued and the 3/4 length is so much less bulky. On cold days though, they aren't as warm as my Patagonia Capilene layer.
Wear it all the time
I am prone to knee problems, I wear these all the time and they feel great and my knees are fine! I cannot / will not run without them. I use an XS for the uninsulated tights, but in these, because they "give"less, I had to use a Small.
Love these tights!
Picture it.....22 degrees...my first ever run below 32....only a little bit of sun.....it was awesome!!! I almost never run in the winter time or really when it is below freezing and do my cardio inside or hike a lot when skiing instead of running. I always thought the chicks outside running when it's cold were totally nuts! No more!!!!
Awesome tights! I was a little cold at first and was worried as I left my house but after about 1 mile I was pleasantly warm! I had put on shorts on top of these and didn't really need them. Considering I do not run much in the winter, the support of these tights was amazing. I ran 3.5 miles right out the door (well jogging really, I don't really run).
The fit was snug but comfortable, I was worried at first since they looked so small. I am 4 foot 11 and in the winter am a bit heavier, but the XS was right on. My knee which gives me trouble when I run did really well and tonight I feel terrific!
I would recommend these tights and the pink stitching is totally cute. I will say though, that having super short legs like myself since I am so short, to line up the knee support I had some bunching of the fabric on my thighs. I don't think there's much I can do, I'm just really short.
I loved them!!
These tights are awesome, they offer great support, I specially like the support they offer in the back and the belly. They are warm but if you are in warm weather they are cool enough. I totally recommend them, they worth every cent!
Wanted to love these
I would have kept these except they bunched up at the backs of my knees, creating unwanted pressure there. This is definitely not desirable for the circulatory system in your legs.
Worth every penny!
I tend to get fatigued around my knees when skiing -- I don't know how these tights work, but I can ski longer and recover better with the compression they offer. They also work as a great base layer and provide a degree of warmth -- I was concerned that I might need another layer between these tights and my pants, but I was plenty warm without one.
I heart these tights!
I purchased these tights to run a marathon in the winter. Wore them for several runs in mid 20s and they were perfect! I started the marathon with some insulated track pants on over these since I was scared by a wind chill of 11 and got too hot after mile 1. After shedding the track pants these tights kept me happy to the end worn solo. The pink stitching also went wonderfully with my tutu- I swore I would wear a tutu for my first marathon. Great times!
I like these things
After reading the other reviews, I went by the size chart and while they are hard to put on, I can see why they need to be (so they give the support). They seem to fit fine.
I am a 46 year old female beer league racer (12 handicap) and I have to say that these longies were sweet. I felt very strong and stable while skiing/racing in them -- not entirely due to the product probably but certainly they offered something -- and this is what I was hoping for. I want to be able to ski with my ski pants (powder pant style) w/o wearing a GS suit yet still having that tight feeling around my lower body -- and it worked!
Perfect in every way
I purchased the CWX insulator stabilyx tights for a ski trip to Summit County, Colorado. These tights were perfect in every way! Warm enough for the brisk 16 degree mornings. Moisture-wicking and not too warm for the afternoons. Very supportive- my legs did not get tired, even though this was my first ski trip of the year, and I skied at least 4 hours a day for 5 days straight.
I like the capri length as I don't like my base layers tucked into my ski boots. These capris are thin enough to wear under jeans as well, without a lot of bulk. The waist sits a couple of inches below the belly button.
Slightly pricey- but quality is not cheap, and in this case, you get what you pay for.
can anyone please tell me approx. how long...
can anyone please tell me approx. how long are these 3/4's in a size M? I am 5'3" and wonder if the 3/4 translates into "full length" for me. Thanks.
Hi There. At 5'3 you would probably do best with a size small rather than medium. The Small ranges for women between 5'2 and 5'6 who are between 110 and 135 lbs. I hope that helps.
can i still wear this in summer when i go...
can i still wear this in summer when i go for my run?
Does muscle support ever go out of style? No, but you may want to look at the non-insulated version for use in Summer- http://www.backcountry.com/cw-x-3-4-length-stabilyx-tight-womens
