Upgraded strength and resiliency.

Consider the Candy 2 Pedals by Crank Brothers a major upgrade over the cheaper versions, due to the 6061-T6 aluminum body, which provides added resiliency and strength when you inevitably bash these on rocks, roots, and unforgiving trail surfaces. They're still incredibly versatile, lending themselves to everything from cyclocross racing to fast-paced XC and aggressive trail rides where the slightly larger platform and four-sided entry makes it fast and intuitive to clip in.

The Candy 2s are an awesome choice for the gravel grinder and trail rider seeking something that's both easy to use and a bit more durable than cheaper composite versions. Its four-sided entry sheds muck every time you clip in, meaning you won't have any issues getting the cleat to engage when your mountain bike shoes are caked with mud. Customizable release angles of 15 and 20 degrees allow you to bail quickly during sketchy situations on the trail, or maintain a bit more security for descending at high speeds.

Trail / gravel / commuter choice

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Weight:

Been on Egg Beaters for some 15+ yrs now. They are on my dual suspension cross country Santa Cruz Tall Boy and my 4 season Surly crosscheck commuter. They are great for 2 bolt type cleats. Four sided entry great for frequent entry/exit like cyclocross or commuting. Fair amount of float. I do note more shoe/pedal rub with these than some others, which is mildly aggravating when commuting, not noticeable on my Santa Cruz Tall Boy. Like most two bolt cleats, more risk of a hot spot along the sole when compared to road cleat (3 bolt) systems, but 3 bolt cleats dont work on trail or if any walking needed. Compared to spd, I like the forward or reverse entry and 4 sided vs 2 sided. I put about 500 miles a month commuting on these.

More durable but not worth the upgrade

Having been through a lot of Eggbeaters from the first generation onwards I?m a big fan of the series. You get lightweight with ease of clipping in and out in all conditions. These are the best mtb pedal hands down. What most people don?t realize is that the cleats do take some time to break in which means you will want to twist well out of what you might consider the normal range until the cleats are broken in. This is normal, but if you?re coming from SPDs you may find yourself stuck on a few occasions if you haven?t made the mental adjustment. I have crashed many times with eggbeaters and they generally unclip as reliably as any other pedal system I?ve used over my 20+ years of riding clipless pedals. These pedals are actually heavier than the cheaper plastic bodied Candy and having ridden that pedal as well through all manner of conditions I don?t really consider this aluminum bodied version a huge upgrade. The composite body is pretty durable and protects the pedal well. Unlike the regular eggbeater I have never broken a wing whereas I have broken several wings on my normal eggbeaters hitting rocks and such. If you?re handy you can also upgrade the spindles yourself to Ti which gives you a cheap and significantly lighter pedal. On another note this might be considered a somewhat lower profile / lighter variation to the Mallett/enduro pedals so it might suit someone looking for a fairly bombproof light pedal but doesn?t need the bigger platform underfoot.
