bear country necessity
I primarily bought this to make my girlfriend feel safe while camping and backpacking. We thankfully haven’t had to put it to use but she likes knowing we have something to defend ourselves against our largest animal friends. It’s really a bear country necessity.
Saves lives. From bear - and elk
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Always carry a can in the backcountry. I've never had to use it but I know a friend has used it in Alaska and stopped a charging bear. Also talked to several rangers in Yellowstone who have sprayed it a few times to stop aggressive elk. So, you know, not just for bear!
Worth the peace of mind!
Never had to use it, but it's definitely worth the peace of mind of having it with you.
Nice to have
Easy to hook on your backpack, also nice to have the comfort from it. Kind of heavy for backpacking but probably nice to have it on hand with extra weight then to die from a bear for not wanting the extra weight.
Sleep tight, don't let the Bears bite!
Good piece of mind, having one of these next to you while sleeping under the stars. Kind of like an avalanche beacon... You don't want to have to use it, but when you do, you'll be glad you have it! Don't camp near your food, and you shouldn't have any problems!
Ease Of Mind.
Didn't have to use it but I'm glad I had it.
better safe than sorry
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
Good to have incase of a bear or cougar
Peace of Mind
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I haven't actually used this yet, but purchased it for a recent backpacking trip for some peace of mind in bear country. I like how it fits into a water bottle pouch on a pack or can be fastened to a belt, both allowing for easy access if needed. The directions it comes with makes it easy to understand how to use it, but even without them it seems pretty self-explanatory.
NIce
Haven't used it but i know it is there
Peace of Mind
Chances are low that I will ever have to use it, but it's good to know it's on you. Small enough to keep somewhere that is easily accessible. Trigger seems simple enough that it won't slow you down in a situation.
Better to have it and not need it
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
This is great and I have never had to use it! I would like to keep it that way! First, it is reasonably priced, but still gives me the security that I need. The holster has a belt loop and holds the trigger securely., this helps reduce the chance of accidental discharge. It has a glow in the dark tab to show you where you need to slide the safety. Also the nozzle is red so that you do not accidentally shoot it in your own face. Would recommend and will update if I ever need to discharge it :)
Necessity in the Wild
Counter Assault makes awesome products to keep you safe in the wild and this Bear Spray is something that I always keep with me whenever I am camping or backpacking way out in the wilderness. I haven't had to use it yet (knock on wood) but if I would ever run into a situation that I would need it, it's always reassuring to know that it's going to do the trick. My friend had to use it the one day I was hiking with him and it's crazy how far it actually sprays as well as works! Overall, it is something that is easy to carry on your side or throw in your bag so why not keep it with you.
Perfect size, easy to carry with you
Haven't had to fend off any bears yet, but it's still reassuring to have Counter Assault at your side in the Backcountry. The 8.1oz size is light and compact. Easy to carry on your belt or in the side pocket of your pack. There's a reassuring story on the packaging as well. Apparently the man who invented counter assault also survived a grizzly attack by using it. If that's not a good enough field test for you, I don't know what is.
For Mornings and Evenings
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
A solo hiker's friend for the early morning summit bids. Keep out of eyes.
Good, I think
I haven't blasted any bears with this, thankfully. It makes me feel better knowing I have it on my hikes where I could potentially run in to a bear.
Trusted Spray
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Counter Assault is one of the only bear sprays I will trust and take into bear country. They are proven to be effective and something I will never hike without. Luckily, I have not had to use it yet, although coming up on a grizzly and getting it in hand, ready to spray is quick and easy. It comes with a belt holster to have it right at your disposal, and the safety is very easy to get off.
Feel free to reach directly out to me with any questions about the spray, or hiking in bear country!
Never Hike Without It
In my life I have owned 3 cans of bear spray and wouldn't go hiking in bear country without it. Paired with bear aware knowledge, you can feel secure hiking in the backcountry with counter assault.
To use properly:
Check the wind direction - you don't want it to spray back into your face. I have been in the vicinity of someone releasing a can and struggled to breath.
Wait for the bear to be making moves toward you - there is no need to spray a peaceful bear. Tell it hello and hopefully it will wander away.
If the bear is aggressive or bluff charging you, this is a great time to go ahead and spray. It is best to make a Z shaped wall in front of you starting with the top. A bear charging typically has its head close to the ground.
My mom was attached in the 80's and was able to survive because of her bear mace. The Griz pushed her out of the way to get to her friend. After coming to her senses, Mom was able to grab her bearspray, spray the bear, and it immediately left.
No kidding, this stuff saves lives.
Don't leave it in your car though! It can explode in high heat and will ruin your car.
Peace Of Mind In Bear Country
Such a good feeling that I have a way to protect myself and my son while camping in bear country. Simple as that.
Security
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Took this backpacking through Teton National park strapped to the front of my pack with the holster. Stayed secure, was easy to remove quickly. Makes me feel secure in bear country along with my bell and bear canister.
Hope I never have to use it!
A product from a company that I trust. Simple and easy to use. Love the holster for hooking to belt or pack. ALways carry in bear spray.
Never hook the spray can onto anything other than your body clothing.
