Roan Mountain Jacket

Throw the super-packable Columbia Men's Roan Mountain Jacket into your backpack, and be ready on the trail when those black clouds roll in. I bought this for my son for camping this summer and am stoked about the quality when compared to the price. He is still growing and I'm not trying to throw down a ton of money on something that's only going to last him a season so this was a seriously great find. The jacket is waterproof and the overall fit and hood shape are very nice. Not too wide or slim in the midsection and the perfect length. it looks really great on!

This jacket is good in that it's pretty waterproof. However, as has been said, it doesn't breathe at all, so it's not a good option for hiking, backpacking, etc.

Great jacket

I was in need of a windbreaker/ rain jacket combo. This jacket has kept me dry in some nasty rain as well as keeping me reasonably warm. I've found it works well in colder weather over a light hoodie.

Can't Jack this Jacket!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I needed a rain jacket for biking, something that was lightweight and waterproof for those random rainstorms that those who seek adventure know all too well. Very first trip out after buying this jacket it poured rain. I stayed as dry and comfy as a bug in a rug. I'm also tall and most jackets fit short. This one had a good length and fit perfectly, even for biking.

Buy A Poncho Instead

I have never owned a totally waterproof jacket and as a result I've always ended up soaking wet during backpacking trips where the rain was coming down. If I want to stay dry I set up a tarp or throw on a poncho when I see the impending storm clouds rolling through. This works great but not if I want to stay on the move. Thats what brought me to the Roan Jacket. I purchased it over a month ago and have taken it on a few short day hikes in the rain and snow to see how it would perform. Does it keep the snow and rain out? Absolutely, 100%. But, I might as well be wearing the plastic poncho I already have as it completely traps all moisture on the inside. My baselayer and midlayer had to be wrung out. I highly recommend it though for camp or light use, but any high heat activity and this thing is next to useless. I've splurged the extra cash in order to find a reliable alternative which I highly recommend, the Mountain Hardwear Quasar.

Does it absorb the rain instead of repelling it? Is that what you're saying when you say it locks in moisture?

I think he is saying it's not breathable fabric. Locks in body moisture when perspiring.
