This would have been my first pair of hiking boots. After some research, decided to get these instead of the Merrell Moab2 or Keen Targhee II. Wanted to love them, especially b/c the wife got the women's pair that fit like a glove. BUT, these shoes definitely run narrow which is unfortunately worse than if it was just a "runs smaller" issue. I'd recommend getting whatever is your normal boot size and going wide if you can. Other boots I've worn (Chippewa, Redwing, Thursday) I had a solid fit with size 8. But these shoes most definitely run incredibly narrow. Get wides, or hopefully going halfsize up will fix the issue.
