Disappointing stove
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Purchased stove last year for a multi week trip and unfortunately had to delay until recently. Stove was very disappointing. The valves were very stiff and I figured they would loosen up with use. First night one of the knobs stripped out and on the 3rd day the other one stripped out. Unfortunately there are not a lot of places in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming to get parts. I ended up having to buy a propane torch just to steal the knob to be able to continue using the stove. the valves did not loosen up much at all so I ended up disassembling in the field and found the grease used in the valves to be hard and caked in. I cleaned the valves and used synthetic brake grease (whatever you have to do in a pinch) and it made a world of difference on the valve action as well as low temp/simmer control. Then 2nd week the ignitor quit working so spent the rest of the trip lighting by hand. This is not a shot at Backcountry (love the company) at all but in the equipment. I thought this was a one off situation however as I researched deeper than when I originally purchased I found out there are many similar statements on this stove. I am now waiting to see what Coleman is going to do with the ignitor and valve knobs since it is a "limited lifetime" warranty.

An outdoor kitchen
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I've cooked a few meals of breakfast tacos, bacon, potatoes, tortellini, and sauteed vegetables. The heat spreads out across the burner decently, but the edges of your skillet definitely have a temperature difference from the center. The burner control knobs seemed to have a really tight tolerance between low and medium. A 1/8th turn seemed to separate low and medium, and then high to max was about a half turn of the knob, so it made it difficult to get the precise heat I needed for sauteeing. While not as nice as my cooktop at home, this still gives me a lot of options for cooking meals when camping.
