Clif Shot Bloks
Clif Bar's Clif Shot Bloks are basically advanced fruit snacks for grown-ups, and we're so down with that. While the taste and texture are reminiscent of childhood, the content of Shot Bloks is specially designed to replace the key carbs and electrolytes that you burn through when you're riding, running, hiking, or doing any other -ing. Each order comes with 18 packages of 6 Shot Bloks, and each package contains 200 calories, plus vital salts and sugars to keep you going. The variety of flavors means that you'll be able to find your favorite, and the convenient sleeve-style package is easy to open and slip into a pocket when you're on the move. Some flavors have extra sodium, if your sweat is particularly salty, and some are loaded up with caffeine, so you can get an extra boost to get you over the top of that tough climb.

When rock climbing, sometimes it feels like an increase in my pulse rate triggers dizziness, and I do suffer from occasional Vertigo. Brought these along on a multi pitch and got neither dizzy nor Vertiginous. Not going to climb without them again, that's for sure.

they do the job

a toss up between these and a gel, these are a little cleaner to get in you so thats nice in a race. you do have to chew them, not as good in a race. they do work about the same as any gel I've used. My kids like them more and it's good to have something help me get something in them on a longer or more intense ride. Taste is palatable, not too bad.

To Chew or Not to Chew
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Great, in theory. I thought I would try these as an alternative to good old gels. My verdict: they're okay for training, when you can let up for a while and spend the time chewing them up before swallowing them. Not so much when racing, or whenever you're drilling it. Chewing them restricts airflow to the old carburetor for way too long, even one at a time. I suppose one could swallow them whole, once the gag reflex is tamed, but surely this would affect digestion/absorption? But then you are still left with half of the cube lodged in your teeth, even after a few pulls on the bottle. If the appeal of these comes down to mostly psychological concerns: having something substantial or more like a real snack, then I will stick with a bar--something you can take manageable nibbles off of. You can't beat gels, in my opinion, for quick and easy nutrition.

My nickname is Bikebeast and I generally ride 100 miles a day on the bike. When I see these on sale I always grab a couple boxes. They taste good, are easy to chew and swallow and I’ve found that they also work well with the Ph1500 tablets I use in my water bottles. This combination works great to continually ride and hold speeds of over 20mph for century after century ride I do. I like that 3 chews make a serving so a package contains two servings which is convenient for long rides.

Great for those who are sodium deficient and need fuel. Much less weight and space than a Gatorade or drink mix, and won't make nature call while on a multi pitch.

These are the absolute best! Great for when you need a little boost to help get you through the rest of the day. I carry these everywhere I go. Throw a couple in your pack and you are set for a full day out in the backcountry. Salted Watermelon and Black Cherry are my favorites.

Easy to eat, tastes good
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I use these because they're easy to access and eat on a bike. My favorites are the salted watermelon, which have the benefit of providing some electrolyte function as well as easy to digest sugar. I also like the Tropical Punch with caffeine for the extra boost. I'm a diabetic and these have been super handy when I've needed a quick boost to my blood sugar. Two blocks are about 15 g of carbohydrate.

Easy & Effective
I open the package a little and keep the whole sleeve in the back pocket of my running shorts. I can reach for them one by one as I run or carry the sleeve next to my water bottle. Taste is pleasant, does not make me thirst and I never had a tummy upset. Easier to dispose or carry home the packaging compared to gels where you have to open then on the run, get hands sticky and the empty packets are messy to carry if there is no bin in sight.

There are so many choices when it comes...
There are so many choices when it comes to energy products. I am not very familiar with them. Does anyone have advice as to what type would be most suited for the following situation? I would like something for when I'm doing a lot of running/crawling with my basic gear on for the Army - not full battle rattle, but about 50 lbs added to me. I don't want caffeine highs. My body doesn't like caffeine much, and I need to be able to have a steady hand still. I'm an expert marksman and my unit still needs to utilize me as such when training or in theater. Thank you in advance for any advice you offer.

I would recommend the Clif Shots and Shot Bloks because they are effective, quick, and actually taste good. I use them for cycling and climbing. Be sure not to get any with caffeine (Cola, and Espresso flavors as far as i know). Hope this helps and thanks for being on that wall for us.

I would be careful with the Shot Blocks and other similar products as I've found they tend to melt in warm temperatures. This is one of the reasons I use GU energy gels. The shot blocks or energy gels are good for replacing electrolytes that you loose when sweating. Use about a serving an hour depending on your level of activity. As Bryan mentioned, avoid the flavors with caffeine. If weight is a concern, consider Endurolyte tablets from Hammer Nutrition. For longer missions make sure you are replenishing your protein with a Cliff Bar or other similar energy bar.

the caffeine used is a gren tea extract = slower burning and not the tremendous crash at the end... leave that for the amphetamine caffeine out there. ask for Roks to get the protein version

Actually, I bite mine in half while riding and tuck them into my cheeks. It dissolves slowly and does not restrict air intake.
