    Smooth bruiser.

    The 60 TPI version of Clement's X'Plor USH 120 TPI Clincher Tire is more than capable of slugging it out with gravel, washboard, fire roads, and poorly maintained tarmac; however, the added suppleness of the 120 TPI option makes those all-surface adventures feel less like a body-bruising title fight.

    The tire lines up with Clement's airport naming convention by taking its name from the airport code for Ushuaia (USH) in Argentina, the southernmost city in the world and the gateway to Tierra del Fuego. Clement cites Tierra's adventure bike touring scene as the inspiration for the tire's construction, which features low, broad knobs and a hard, smooth rolling compound on the centerline that's as at home on dirt as it is on slipshod chip seal. The softer shoulders are bedazzled with rows of diamond-shaped tread for traction on less hospitable surfaces.

    Good tire for the pavement & hard pack.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    Fast rolling on light loose hard pack surface. The grip is great and confident on pavement and gravel with a little drop in tire pressure. I'm on the tarmac 80% of the time and the rest is just loose gravel to hard pack on the side of the road for those unpaved sections in HI. Rode in the wet and still great channeling when it got in those deep sections of water. If you're doing more serious cyclecross I'd go with a more blocky thread for the mud and wet grass or a mtb depending on the conditions. Would definitely recommend if you're mainly on the road or hard pack off-road surface.


    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    While I feel that this is a very good tire for pavement or hard pack off-pavement, I wouldn't recommend them for any surface that is loose or sandy, despite what the ad says. My experience is that the diamond shaped shoulder tread does not provide enough bite on any loose surface. I was running Ritchey Speed Max which I finally worn out after 2,500 miles of corner gripping performance. The Ritchey's, like any other tire with shoulder lugs/knobs are far superior for loose surfaces, rather than the little nubs on these Clements. I found this out the hard way. They call this tire the Smooth Bruiser, well, they definitely left me bruised. You may have a different experience but personally, I will never take these tires off pavement again.

    These tires definitely have a more defined use. Light Tour, gravel, hardpacked and tarmac for sure.

    If you're in loose, the X'Plor MSO is a much better model, and you'll immediately notice the differences looking at the tread.

    I have all 3: The Strata USH, these and the X'Plor MSO, and they all perform differently. The X'Plor USH is right in the middle as a more robust tire with better off road acumen than the Strata USH but not as much as the X'Plor MSO.
