LW 2 Bib Tight

Castelli has been expanding their collection of cycling tights to include options for just about any kind of cold weather conditions. At the same time, they've reported a drop in demand for 3/4 length knickers, so they fill that gap with the LW 2 Bib Tight. The LW stands for Light Winter, which is exactly the conditions these tights are made for. Castelli recommends them for a temperature range of 50 - 65-degrees Fahrenheit, which makes them an ideal option for cooler weather when you don't quite want or need heavy duty thermals.

The LW 2 Bib Tights are constructed using Castelli's signature Thermoflex brushed fabric on the upper portion to keep your thighs and sensitive areas warm. Considering that these tights are designed to be one step above a knicker as far as coverage goes, the lower leg is made of a non-insulated Lycra called Nano Flex Light. This is done to prevent overheating, while at the same time protecting your lower legs from road spray if conditions are a bit wet. Castelli omits ankle zippers to preserve the lightweight feel, but they put in their flagship Progetto X2 Air seamless seat insert which has one of the softest surfaces we've ever felt in a chamois.

  • Cycling tights made for mild winter conditions
  • Designed to be one step up from a 3/4 length knicker
  • Thermoflex fabric on upper keeps your thighs and midsection warm
  • Nano Flex on lower legs prevents overheating and repels water
  • Anatomic cut is borrowed from the Free Aero Race Bib Shorts
  • Progetto X2 Air chamois is supportive and comfortable
  • Recommended for 50 - 65-degrees Fahrenheit

These are excellent for cooler days, 55-69 degrees. They fit well, and look good, but I still prefer the Assos fit through the crotch and seat. I ride in coastal New England where it can be windy and damp. I like to wear long legged tights for the extra protection and compression, even in warmer weather. These are lighter weight than most other long tights which means I could wear these up to 70 degrees. Sizing is tough for me. I am tall and relatively thin, and like my gear tight, so with Castelli I go up a size to large. Quality seems OK, but I am concerned that the seams on the lower legs will give. I have worn only 6 times. Overall, I am pleased with this product and would purchase again. Would like to see more products like this.

For those cool or warming days

Think of these as lightly insulated knickers with a lightweight extension from the calves to the ankles to take the edge off. This approach yields a great shoulder season garment with comfort and versatility from the upper 50s into the upper 60s. Castelli says these can go a little colder than the Velocissimo knickers of which they seem to be loosely based. The sizing is a bit off for me. I am a Large in the Castelli Velocissimo 3 and Polare 2, and the LW2 is mostly a Large. The torso, hips, and thighs feel right but the legs are a bit long. Not a lot, but the pocket in the knees to keep the seams out of the knee tends to drop below my knee. The fit and finish of this garment are incrementally better than the Velocissimo in all regards except the pad. It has a higher quality feel, though admittedly it isn't at a premium level (or price). The Progetto X2 Air pad is out of place on these, though, as I find the KISS Air2 pad less awkwardly padded and far more comfortable.

Got these bibs in order to get out early in the season and they haven't let me down. Half dozen rides so far and enjoy the fit, the comfort of the chamois and warmth from the length while allowing freedom of movement. 2XL not XL. They do run small.

I bumped up from 3 to 4 after a little more use. They are a good value, especially when on sale. Just don't expect the same level of performance or warmth as $300+ bibs. Good for days that start in the low 50s and climb up to 70F. These are more like 3/4 length bib tights with a lower piece of non-insulating material tacked on over the calves to make them look like full-length bib tights. The fit over the thighs and waist is true to other Castelli bibs (I wear XL in these versus L in many other brands). The material conformed well from the waist down. The chamois is decent, but needs periodic adjustment; it seems softer and a little less supportive after a few hours in the saddle than a higher-end denser chamois. But not bad.

I would describe these as light weight bib tights, so the product description is accurate. We all have different temperature tolerances, but I wouldn’t wear them much below 60°, which is fine for a Southern California winter. Good for a sunny day when fleeced tights would be too warm. They run small but I think a size up would have been too large and less supportive. The Progetto X2 chamois is among the best.

I run cold always and I can get these bad boys down to 40° without issue. Anything below that is too cool for these.

I like these tights. They work great. I'm a size medium in almost everything Castelli. 170cm and 62-66 kg depending on the time of year. These fit just like all my other Castelli stuff.
