Why We Like The Free Aero Race 4 Bib Short

Castelli claims that while its women's clothing is typically designed from the ground up for, well, women, the Free Aero Race 4 Bib Short is designed specifically for racing. That being said, it's built using minimalist construction, one that focuses on aerodynamics and also comfort, as racing requires long hours in the saddle, both during training and on race day. It features some new details making subtle improvements over its already best-selling short.

It uses a new leg gripper that still features a lie-flat raw-cut edge but now has vertical silicone stripes to keep it in place without restricting stretch. New fabrics allow for better print quality and Castelli also updated the seams to improve the fit and give the short an even better look. It also re-engineered the bib straps with new fabrics and construction so you stay cooler and it lies flatter and is more durable. Final updates include a new Progetto X2 Air Seamless insert and its one of the softest surface fabrics we've ever felt in a chamois.

Adore The Fit / Needs Improvement

Familiarity:

These big shorts fit like an absolute GLOVE. If you?re familiar with your Castelli sizing - get what you normally would. Someone had told me they looked laser cut for my body, and they sure feel that way. The pocket in the back is pretty useless? I suppose keeping a small cloth in there for forehead sweat when on the trainer could be okay? But I tend to drape that over my bars. Outside they?ve been durable. I?ve gotten mud, salt, and lots of miles into one pair. The mesh straps WILL rip. Especially if you have nails. Be careful. The chamois has bunched up and created a weird ball and it?s not necessarily accessible, though there seems to have been a thought about making the chamois accessible through an open seam in the crotch. I?m 6 feet tall, and around 190 lbs but very slender. I?m a Medium in other brands and got a Large for these. They?ve outlasted my Machines for Freedom bib shorts so far, in terms of miles. And they?ve been put through the wringer in cyclocross races. They?d otherwise be perfect aside from the mesh tearing and chamois issue. I love them, but feel as though, with cycling apparel, you shouldn?t need to be so darn dainty with it to prevent ripping and tearing (which has happened with other Castelli apparel).

Absolutely amazing!

I followed recommendations and went a size up my usual size in Us shorts (Medium) and went for a large. It fit perfectly! It looks great, the shammy is super soft and thick, plus the bib straps are not too thick or tight (so feels very comfortable). Was so excited about these that I reviewed it after first use... but will update my review after multiple uses! Totally worth the investment!

These are my first pair of $150+ cycling shorts, and it took me a while to decide to make the investment. The difference is noticeable! Overall, these bib shorts feel well-made. They are made of a smooth fabric that gives a sleek look (a little bit of effort to put them on, but not too bad) and provide a frictionless feel while in the saddle. Can't complain about the chamois either. Seams are sturdy. Also, I loved that I could order a different color than black! For my particular moment in cycling, this represents money well-spent.

Sleek and Energizing!

These are a little hard to get on - and I am sort of between a small and medium for most brands - so I tried the medium. But once I got them on they were unbelievably comfortable and I took my longest ride yet! I have tried Rapha and Pearl Izumi bibs, with Pearl Izumi definitely a close 2nd, but the construction and fabric of these Castelli bibs really kept my legs feeling fresh. You almost don't feel them once they are on! The chamois is the most cushioned and comfortable I have ever tried. I am 5'7, 122 lbs with a longish torso which makes for a close fit as far as the straps are concerned, but they did not pull once I got on my bike. Am looking for another pair but will wait 'til they go on sale!
