Elemento Lite Jacket

Inspired by technology found in the world of mountaineering, Castelli created the Elemento Lite Jacket for protection from the cold at an exceptionally low weight. It's designed for high-intensity cycling in brisk temperatures, when warmth is important but breathability is paramount. It's not a race cut jacket like the Alpha series. Instead, the Elemento Lite fits slightly looser due to the fabrics used. It's certainly more breathable though, with comparable insulation.

The Elemento is constructed much like a mountaineering jacket, using a layer of insulation sandwiched between two layers of woven nylon, with the outer layer employing a water-repellent finish to shed light precipitation. Unlike most mountain jackets, this one isn't completely windproof. Instead, Castelli engineered a small amount of permeability. This little bit of air that gets into the jacket helps pick up moisture and evaporate it more efficiently than any membrane fabric, keeping you dry when tough climbs or hard intervals cause inevitable perspiration. The insulation layer is polypropylene, which is a synthetic down material that allows fully breathability without any water absorption, and is also incredibly light.

As alluded to above, these fabrics have limited stretch, which is why Castelli went with a semi-fitted cut rather than full on race fit. To ensure mobility, there are plissé stretch panels on the sides, elbows, and wrists that allow freedom of movement on the bike. Castelli finishes the jacket with an inner waist closure that lets you seal out drafts, or you can open it up for extra ventilation.

Too warm for fall, perfect for winter

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
L
Height:
6' 3"
Weight:
170

I have a size 38 chest and the L fit me perfectly in this jacket. I typically take a M in most cycling clothing (other than castelli), so the size one up mantra fits for this. I've ridden in it on group rides and solo training rides in temps between 18 and 45 fahrenheit. Around 20 degrees, it warms fine with a wicking long sleeve baselayer and my core never chilled. Above 30 degrees, I sweat in the jacket if I wear more than a short sleeve jersey and exert myself at all. The ventilation above 20mph is real, and I could feel cool air on my arms and chest, but somehow I was never cold. Below 20mph, I didn't notice much air movement, and wouldn't recommend this jacked above 45 degrees at all, as it is too warm. However, I have yet to find a warmer jacket for the 0 degree to 45 degree range that is also a cycling cut and doesn't lock in the heat and make you a sweaty mess. Surprisingly, the warmth is there when you're standing around chatting with your club after the ride as well. I am not a hard man, so I have not ridden with this jacket in the rain.
