The perfect carabiner

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love these things. They're huge, great to clip, and super light. These are by far my favorite carabiner for my alpine draws and I will be soon to replace the carabiners on all my cams.

Full size and SUPER light

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Ive been pretty impressed with these. I picked them up on sale and was so impressed with the light weight and full size that I am slowly replacing my rack with these. They are large and very easy to clip. No complaints.

Full Size Without The Weight

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These biners are a great choice if you want a full size d-shape wire gate carabiner that are lightweight, and easy to clip. The gate action is solid, consistent, and reliable. For the price, these are an awesome choice to lighten up any rack.

Rack On A Diet?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought a grip of these carabiners to ultimately build/replace the alpine draws I was using.

After building my 9 alpine draws, I had shaved off over half a pound in weight (250 g). Other than the obvious weight benefits, the carabiners offer great feel and confidence when clipping and are easy to maneuver. I want to replace every carabiner in my rack with these. With the weight difference, there is a drop in strength, but the compromise is negligible (especially when used for trad) IMO.

The Photon would be a likely candidate to complement any alpine draw setup, ultra-light cam, or sport draws.

LIGHTWEIGHT!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These have to be one of the lightest weight biner out there. There are incredible light but strong as ever. They also didn't give up size for the weight these are big and easy to clip

Generously Sized and Light!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have mainly used these for alpine draws. One of the biggest pro's this has over other biners is it's size. It is especially generous when you've got gloves on while ice or alpine climbing. Gate tension does seem to be the lightest of any of my other biners but I haven't seen any ill effects due to this.

Great bail gear

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought a couple of these to use as bail gear, and after months of sitting on my harness they performed great when called upon. Sturdy gear that doesn't break the bank when you have to leave it behind.

Meh

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The gate tension on my Photon Wires vary wildly, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence. They also seem to really like to cross clip through other biners on my harness, which can be a real pain to deal with when you're cruxing out and can't pull a piece off your harness. Finally, they're just so darn thin and flimsy seeming that they really just don't strike me as all that solid, and I imagine would break over an edge far easier than just about any other biner on the market.

Favorite Biner

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Currently my favorite full size racking biner on the market. Super light weight, narrower and lighter than Neutrinos or Phases, full size, colors correspond well to cams, great for making alpine draws as well. Have a slightly lower fail point compared to the Trango or BD 24kN rating, but if you're generating 21kN you're having a bad day anyways.

Can't go Wrong with Purple

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Photons are awesome for alpine draws. The tension is good, they're super light, they're full sized, and somehow still actually within budget.

Great Full Size Biner

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought these biners to go with my BD trad rack I just recently built. Although not as light as the neutrino, I like how these clip in better. They clip in quickly and easily and feel bomber. I will trade this ease in clipping for a couple ounces in weight .

Easy to clip

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These carabiners are great, super lightweight. The thing i like most about them is how easy they are to clip. By far my favorite biner whether it be on a cam or a quick draw they don't give you any grief.

Light weight Carabiner

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The reason I bought these was for my BD Cams. They are not that much lighter then then Neutrino ( .3 oz to be exact) but when you are carrying alot of gear on a big Multi pitch Climb every ounce adds up. They clip great and have had 0 issues with gate tension

Light weight Carabiner

Good carabiner

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Nice and lightweight. Never had a problem with the gate tension and in general I found them to be pretty similiar to the BD Neutrino. Performs well, does what it needs to do. Not much to a carbiner really...

Weak gate opening strength

They almost nailed it, weight is amazing for the size, still has a generous rope radius for a "featherweight" biner, and they clip nicely. For me there is one major problem with the photons though, weak gate tension..
I purchased 10 to try out for my 60cm alpine draws, but I found that they would frequently cross clip with each other when racked on my harness because the gate tension is so low. Not exactly what you want to find when you've just made a tenuous placement in a steep stance and only have one hand to sort out the cluster.
The second strike against them on gate tension, I tried using them to rack nuts. While making a high step with my right foot I looked down to see that my thigh had nudged the gate open and a nearly brand new DMM offset nut was falling off. There goes $15 in to a bottomless offwidth, think it had been placed all of twice. To clarify here, the racking biner for my nuts was oriented gate in on the front of my gear loop, just my leg moving upwards had opened the gate and a nut slid right off. Ridiculous.

I've never had those problem with any biner on my or a partners rack. That covers a lot of brands and a lot of models. I stuck with BD OZ for my 60cm slings now.

I now have the photons on the rope side of 5 quickdraws, with BD oz biners on the gear side (clean nose is nicer to pull out of the cams sling). They work well in this application, the rubber insert in the QD dogbone seems to eliminate the cross clipping problems that I had on 60cm "alpine draws".
I still use them on my 120cm slings when I rack around my shoulder and clip together, no worry of cross clipping there.

I've also used camp orbits on sport draws and have the nano 22 as my cam racking biners, the gate tension on both of those is perfect. If camp matched their gate tensions this would be a perfect biner.

    Great Full Size Carabiner

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great full size carabiner, easy to clip and use for trad and ice climbing. Very light and seems like less rope drag than my BD carabiners.

Awesome Light weight Full size biner

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Overall, these are an awesome, lightweight, full sized carabiner.

    Gate Size:
The gates on these are plenty big and super easy to clip. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Biner Size:
These are a full size carabiner. A little big for my liking but still an awesome biner over all.

    Weight:
For a full size carabiner, it's ridiculous how light these are.
