The images make the bottoms look almost like a cozy sweat pant. One image shows the material gathered around the ankle. I am a 36 waist, and I purchased a size XL, and the pants hang straight down to just above the ankle. The pants feel cold when I try them on--not warm and cozy. These pants are the same price as the Smartwool Merino 250 pant, so why buy these? I think the reason you would buy these is because they are easier to launder. I think Merino 250 is probably more delicate and requires more than a day to hang dry. I am uncertain whether I will keep these bottoms and the matching top (also XL). The matching top has a slimmer fit and plenty of length in the body, which I like. On the other hand, the collar is very loose, which I don't think will trap as much heat as if it fit snugly against my neck. I also tried some Marmot "Men's Baselayer Tights" in size XL, and I like the fit of the Burton Heavyweight X pant better. The Marmot tights seem like they have too little rise from the crotch to the waistband making it feel as if the waistband in the back is too low. I kept pulling the back up. I didn't have that problem with the Burton Heavyweight X pant. The Marmot Men's Baselayer Tight and matching top also have a snugger fit, which was fine for me.
