    Guide-worthy performance and toughness.

Designed to handle the toughest conditions the backcountry has to offer, the Burton Men's AK 3L Hover Gore-Tex Jacket is the choice of powder-seeking pros and guides alike. Gore-Tex Pro Shell provides unwavering protection from snow and offers the breathability needed for challenging ascents, and an array of clever features helps you weather any storm.

Enhancing the legendary breathability of Gore-Tex, the Gore Micro Grid Backer keeps you from overheating and getting soaked with sweat on tough climbs and leg-burning descents. The Neck Gasket Collar and Powder Gasket Cuffs seal out snow and wind when storms are coming in sideways. Gore-Seam tape and water-resistant YKK zippers prevent any moisture from slipping in through the cracks. Great, Stylish jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

The burton AK goretex shell is exactly what I would expect from a top of the line Burton product. The powder skirt works like a charm and the shell keeps me completely dry in the wettest snow. It's also extremely breathable and I never get too sweaty on the hill.

Got back a couple of weeks ago from my trip to the Salzburg region in Austria. Snowed about 2ft+ over the week with temps ranging between 8-30 degrees. Jacket kept me dry, as a three layer should. Plenty of room for layers kept me warm. High collar does keep you a bit drier in heavy snow or pow slashes but it also was constantly rubbing my face and getting caught under my helmet strap when I was buckling it. Tad annoying at times. I don't like the powder gasket cuffs. They slide around unless you crank them down tight and then you feel them more than regular gaiters. The best thing I thing is the cut. I like fit the most. I'll ride in it a couple of seasons then give it to my son 13 year old son...by that time it will fit him. Design issues just keep me from loving this jacket. I was hoping to ride in it four to 6+ seasons...BTW, go to Austria you won't regret the trip. Riding/skiing is fairly cheap, food & beer on & off mountain is great and the views are amazing.

    Like it, don't love it...not worth $630

Bought this on supersale (2016 vs 2017 = same jacket...$400 vs $630. Even with that discount I kinda feel I paid too much for what it delivers. Bought it to have a super waterproof jacket that I can count on keeping me dry and warm (lot's of room to layer to conditions without being super baggy). Things that bug me about this jacket (and 2017 version). No good way to secure your phone. Inside phone pocket is too small for any smartphone made in like, the last ten years (come on Burton wth?) large external pocket has no pass through or mesh pocket to secure it so it flops around. Again no cord pass through from external chest pockets to inside for cord management if you want to ride with music. Hood covers well and is cut to ride with a boarder's stance in mind vs a skier...you could probably ride with it on if necessary. Fits my Smith Helmet . Collar covers the neck/face well, but is so high that when it's not totally zipped up it just splays open with this enormous open collar that looks wierd. You essentially have to keep it zipped up pretty high all the time. Would have preferred regular gaiters to the powder gasket cuffs. Material is light, but a bit thinner than I expected...a bit dated IMHO. Should get gore C-knit at this price point. Fabric is stiff and crinkly & noisy as well. You can get a lot of jacket at $600+. This falls short. Doable at $400...feel it really should be priced between $325-$375 at most. Live in Germany and taking it out for a week long trip in Austria very soon. Hoping it performs well due to all the hype on Burton's top end jacket. Recommend looking at Volcom high end jackets as well or other brands. Unfortunately the jacket I wanted was sold out in my size. I would only recommend this jacket to a friend if it was on serious sale...not worth $630 barely $400 if that. A bit long for me but I'm a short stocky guy so it's more me than the design.

Hey John! Bummer to hear you are not enjoying the jacket as much as you'd hoped. What I can say is that this jacket is expensive for a reason! The 3 Layer Gore-Tex Pro is going to be the most lightweight, durable, and waterproof jacket when it really gets rough out there. Similar 3L Gore-Tex jackets are just as expensive from other brands such as Patagonia, Arc'teryx, and Norrona. 3L Gore is always going to be noisy and crinkly. If you are willing to sacrifice some weight, maybe a 2L option would be better, as they are less crinkly. Let me know if you don't love it and I'd love to help you find something else that may work better for you.

    Have fun in Austria :)

I took this shell on a trip down to Chile this last summer. I've owned a number of Gore-Tex Pro jackets but the fit and features of this jacket made it one of the best I've used. The neck opening was perfect for being comfortable, compatible with a helmet, and still keeping the snow out. The double cuffs were awesome for keeping in warmth and keeping out snow. My only complaint was the cuffs were a little bit harder with mittens, but not a big deal at all. The pockets were plentiful and in all the right places. With the AK and Gore-Tex marks you know this jacket will last through a few seasons worth of abuse. I went with a large for layering and a slightly bigger fit and it worked perfect.

The Burton AK line is one of the best in the industry for waterproof/breathable shells. This piece is made with a 3 Layer Gore-Tex Pro membrane, designed to withstand the rough and tough of the outdoors while still being lightweight. For being a technical piece, the Burton AK line does a great job making a functional, yet stylish piece. Pair this with a solid baselayer (such as a medium weight merino wool option) and a breathable midlayer (such as a Patagonia R1 or Patagonia Nano-Air) and you're ready to take on anything the cold has to throw at you.
