A new Brooks.

The Brooks C17 Cambium Saddles are a massive, tectonic-plate-shifting departure from the venerable saddle maker. Why? Because they’re not leather. Brooks made its name over the last century making the best leather saddles on the planet. Even as other saddle makers adopted microfibers, foams, gels, and other modern materials, Brooks remained steadfast. Now, though, they’ve developed a rubber/canvas construction technique that offers all the benefits of their leather saddles in a weather- and vegan-friendly package. The shell of the saddle is a natural rubber, which is vulcanized to a cotton canvas topper.

The break-in period for a Brooks saddle is nearly as legendary as the saddles themselves, and the Cambiums are a bit different, though special care should still be taken. The rubber needs very little breaking in –it should be quite comfortable out of the box. The canvas topper, however, is a bit rough, and will abrade Lycra shorts quickly and severely. For this reason, we recommend breaking this saddle in on a more casual bike (one that you’d wear jeans on) before putting it on a bike that will see Lycra time.

A Fantastic Sadle!

I've put it through the wringer

This is a fantastic saddle! I highly recommend it. After giving the factory saddle on my new bike the benefit of the doubt for 500+ miles, I went searching for a more comfortable saddle. After testing a few, I decided on the Cambium C17. The Cambium C17 was comfortable right out of the box. It's firm, but has just enough flex, and adjusts well to my sit bones. I ride it in street clothes on my 18-mile, round-trip commute and on community rides <40 miles. I've ridden it on several metric and full centuries with cycling shorts. Toward the 90 mile/five hour mark, my butt starts to get a little tired, but I suspect that has more to do with the length of time sitting than the saddle itself; and, after a short break, I'm able to finish the rest of the ride in relative comfort. I've put over 2500 miles on it in the 5 months I've owned it. The color has changed from the original slate (a grayish brown) to a much lighter brown (think standard brown dress shoes). I've read other reviews commenting on the slate color fading. I noticed that Brooks no longer carries the Cambium line of saddles in slate. I suspect this may be why. Other than the color change, the saddle seems to be holding up remarkably well to regular use. It has weathered snow, heavy rains, and the humid summer in Washington, DC. While I park it inside at home and at work, it's been on bike camping trips and sat parked under the summer sun for extended periods of time. It still looks great. I imagine this saddle will last a long time. However, when I need another saddle, I would definitely consider purchasing another Cambium.

Perfect Saddle for Gravel Racing

I've put it through the wringer

I bought the C17 over a year ago for my gravel racing bike. I wanted the comfort for ultra marathon events and the weather resistance for the rain and mud that seems to come with every race. I've put well over 10,000 miles on this saddle without any problems or discomfort -- ever. I rode the Dirty Kanza 200 on this saddle and, when I got off the bike, my backside was the only part of me that didn't hurt. My backside felt as if I hadn't been on the bike at all -- no pain, no numbness, no residual sense of having sat on a bike. And the saddle has been completely maintenance free. GREAT saddle!

Put this on my hard tail MTB and I love it! I can feel just enough flex to make it that much more comfortable.

I've used it several times

While it isn't the most technological saddle on the market, this Brooks is comfy and classy for your rig! I am pretty picky when it comes to saddles, but I wanted to keep a classical look on my touring rig when I set it up, and this one has fit the bill. Also, the great part is, that there is no crazy maintenance or break in period like other classic brooks!

Bovine free for your enjoyment.

Vegan Friendly

I've put it through the wringer

This saddle looks amazing. Will make good bike and turn it into an awesome bike. I will admit that for me this isn't as comfortable as the b17. They say one of the benefits of this saddle is that you don't have to break it in like the leather ones. That may be true, but unlike the leather ones which get more comfortable over time this one stays the same. Don't get me wrong. This is a comfortable saddle, just doesn't work for me as well as the b17, especially on those longer mileage days. Put it on my bikepacking bike and it bumped up the cool factor by at least 7 points. Nice thing is you don't have to worry about it getting wet like the leather saddles. Also don't need to worry about adjusting the tension. This thing is a lot lower maintenance. The fabric top does seem to cause more wear on my shorts than other saddles. I do wear normal shorts though and not lycra. The slate color isn't as dark as I was hoping. It has turned into a brownish color with use. Still looks good, just not black like I was hoping it would be. All in all a good saddle and the perfect way to complete a custom build or add some style to any bike.

Perfect for Cross.

I have been using this saddle on my cross bike for the last six months and I could not be more in love with it. The saddle is the most comfortable saddle I have ever had and the fact that it is a Brooks Saddle without leather makes me a happy vegan.

My favorite saddle

I've put it through the wringer

I have this on my SS 29er, and it's absolutely perfect. Unlike a leather Brooks, I don't have to worry about mud, rain, or anything else. The best part, though, is the already-broken-in aspect of this saddle. Instead of riding a rigid leather saddle for a few thousand miles until it's perfect, the Cambium comes out of the box perfect. It definitely takes the edge off medium-sized bumps that tire volume alone won't swallow on a hardtail, and it's just as comfortable as can be. It's heavy, to be sure, but I'm happy to trade comfort for weight when it comes to saddles.
