    Ski, pray, love

I use to use the thickest balaclava ever made. When wearing this one for the first time I immediately fell in love. It maintained a nice tight fit throughout the day. If it got too hot, you could easily pull the mouth section down to get a nice cooldown. Overall a good clava!

      Great under a helmet

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

This was part of a gift and here are their remarks: Good fit while keeping my head warm on colder mountain days. Even enjoy the cool pattern!

      Works Great

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've used this on a couple hikes over the winter and it works really well at blocking wind and keeping heat in. It does tend to direct breath up and into your sunglasses which can cause them to fog up at times, but I've found that that happens with most balaclavas and face masks that I've used.

      Works great!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Only giving it 3 stars because it didn't work great for me. as someone who wears glasses these kinda just channels the air your expelling upwards and fogs up your glasses while snowboarding. Otherwise, I purchased another one for my nephew and he loves it.

      So So...

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Blackstrap Balaclavas were highly recommended to me, so I bought the Hood Balaclava and the Expedition Balaclava. They both have a great fit and are comfortable to wear.
Due to their material (mostly nylon), I did not find them to be particularly warm or offer much protection from the elements. As soon as the mouth guard gets wet from your breath or weather it makes your face cold. For me, I prefer my polar buff and other windstopper balaclavas I own.

      Perfect Balaclava

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My favorite thing about it is that it fits a little looser across the face! I teach snowboarding and having to talk through a tight buff/balaclava is pretty hard, and having to pull one down is inconvenient and cold!
Other bonuses: the colors are sick, the fit is great, and the material is comfy!

      Warm and fog free

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Usually I get fogged up goggles with some face masks, but this one actually keeps me cruising with clear goggles. Keeps my face nice and toasty during the cold and windy days. Would recommend to anyone looking for a new full face ski mask.

      Game changer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The hood is a game changer when it comes to winter face protection, it’s light weight and very breathable, doesn’t matter if it’s 10 degrees out or if it’s a spring day at 60 degrees you can wear this thing and keep protected from the emelments, all while having the largest range of styles to chose from and at an affordable price!

A good step up from a buff

I've always skied with buffs, including the standard version, and the winter version which is longer and has a fleece bottom. They worked alright, but I struggled to get them to stay over my face without fogging up the goggles. Also, on really cold days, the condensation from my breath would eventually freeze the buff solid.

Enter the BlackStrap Hood Balaclava. I keep it around my neck like a buff when I just need a little protection from wind and sun, and then throw it up over my head when things get really bad. It works great under a ski helmet, even a mountain bike helmet. It also stays up! No worries about slipping down. The polyester/nylon construction seems to handle cold better - no issue with condensation, yet.

Bonus - a plethora of colors and designs means you can dial in your style!

        So far so sick

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been on the market for a balaclava like this for a while, and it's pretty much everything I could hope for. The fabric is soft against the skin, and it is easy to pull the buff up over your nose once it gets super bitter on the mountain. Otherwise it sits comfortably just below your bottom lip, and protects most of the ski on your face from sun/wind burn. I wear a beanie on my head still, the mask itself isn't extremely insulated. However, I don't have much padding or insulation in my helmet to begin with, so if you have a warmer helmet, you probably don't need a beanie in addition.

        Frostbite Forgotten

I have been looking for a simple but effective face mask to prevent my nose from getting frostbitten; It's not cute to have a purple dot on the end of your nose, ask me how i know. This mask is a perfect all around item, not too thick, not too thin, nice n' stretchy, plus the unique design of the BS balaclava means its more comfortable then other brands when adjusting the coverage. The print is pretty spot on, the colors look like the ones pictured on the site and nothing looks out of place.

For me the biggest problem is my nose, its huge, so i need something that's not too tight but also prevents total exposure to the elements. This balaclava is a little tight around the tip but as i wear it more it should conform to my face and prevent the pesky purple nose,

I will update my reviews to include some big storm riding performance and how it preforms in the super cold temperatures so stay posted.

          This Has Everything

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I tried a few balaclava's before finding this one that I like. I can switch between cold to hot while skiing in an instant, and I like how this has the option to pull up over your face (and stay put), but can pull down under the chin when you need to suck air on tough runs. My only complaint is that it doesn't have any wool in it which would make it warmer and drier. But the design and prints supersede the lack of wool detail. Highly recommend. Great buy.

Brandi the Hood is more of your all-weather 95% of the season type of piece. If you are looking for a warmer BlackStrap option check out the Expedition series of the Hood. Same great functionality maximum warmth.

          Thanks for the great feedback.

          Best one I've found

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the best balaclava because:
it stays in place - either covering my face or tucked below my chin
          it doesn't freeze
its soft and thin but still warm (not as warm as a hardshell of course, you'll feel high winds)
the designs are more stylish than standard black
one size isn't too big for my small noggin

          5/5 Faceshield

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: True to size

This is by all means a pretty standard balaclava with two really nice features that turn it from average to perfect. The first feature is that the liner inside the balaclava is smooth, slightly insulated, and never noticeable when riding. The second is the adjustable mouth/nose cover that you can pull down into a chin buff strap to talk to friends or breath without restriction. I pull this thing up and down all day depending on the situation. This one hinge is a lifesaver and makes this balaclava super worth it.

I spent a lot of time shopping around for a good balaclava and stumbled across this one. Wore it out on the slopes in 5 to 60 degree F weather and it worked well the whole time. Thin material doesn't get hot but keeps the chill out even when its freezing cold outside. Perfect all temp balaclava. You won't be disappointed and they have some pretty dope colors to choose from. You can always add a warm hat over the balaclava and under your helmet too if needed since it is so low profile.
