Black Diamond's premier harness for ice and mixed climbing.
Black Diamond focused its efforts to make the Xenos Harness primarily for ice, mixed, and alpine climbing. But we all know it's impossible to stay away from the vertical world just because the snow has melted, so go ahead and strap this bad boy on for some rock pulling as well. Its Kinetic Core Construction makes the Xenos sleeker, lighter, and more comfortable so you barely notice it's there while you make your send. Pre-threaded Speed Adjust and leg loop buckles mean you don't have to double-back; just cinch them down and head up. A bullhorn-shaped waist belt is very comfortable when you're hanging on a rope to scope out the next pitch.
Six Ice Clipper slots let you put your clippers where you want all the time despite how many layers you wear. Four pressure-molded gear loops stay in place so you don't struggle unclipping gear during critical moments. Black Diamond inserted a padded lumbar for more comfort than before, and the water-shedding construction means you won't have a wet harness at the end of a snowy day filled with winter cranking and ice climbing.

- Q & A
comfort is great
At first it was a pain in the butt, but once it was adjusted it was an amazing harness, very comfortable, loved the clipper slot it helped on my summit push of Alpamayo.
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This harness has been a gem to own. It has plenty of adjustability for 4 seasons, it is lightweight yet still comfortable, and is fairly compact. If you take everything off of it, it compresses pretty small to take up very little space in the pack. It has all the features one would need for a 4 season harness or for versatility. The rear cord above the haul loop is great for racking those pieces you rarely use or for the things you may use once out of the way. The ice clipper is super functional as well, though it is a bear to use it with the waist belt of a pack if you are doing alpine stuff. Other than that, the gear loops work well with the waist belts of most packs and the ability to adjust the leg loops make getting into it easy while wearing crampons or adjusting for the many layers you may have on. It also seems to have a just right amount of padding for hanging for an extended period of time but yet still light and compact. A solid buy and highly recommended.
For Ice its nice!
Great ice harness. Clipper slots let you organize your screws easily. Plenty of gear loops for everything else. Adjustability is great, but like the reviewer below mentions the BD harnesses can be tricky to dial in with gloves on. I dont mind the adjustments on the leg loops, but elastic on my summer harness is nice. Seems to repel moisture well and is comfortable for the most part.
My only beef with the harness sizing is it would make more sense to run sizes XS for 24-28, S for 28-32 etc. Having the narrow cutoff of 30 for a small leaves you a bit in between sizes at a 30 waist, super common among climbers, and with layers the medium is a tad too big, the small a tad on the extended side.
Great for Ice
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Great to have the ability to move the ice screw clips around, great locations for the spaces. Great gear loops. Super comfortable for hanging belay. Leg loops have great adjustment and can get them over crampons. Only downside is the waist buckle is a challenge with gloves.
