Stance Pant

For most folks, the onslaught of cold weather means an immediate retreat to the safety of the great indoors. But the cold doesn't scare you off, mostly in part because you finally have the opportunity to wear the Black Diamond Men's Stance Belay Synthetic Down Pant as you stand on belay.

With PrimaLoft Silver insulating your buns, you're able to belay your buddy in total warmth, even if the pant gets wet. A Pertex shell encapsulates this furnace-like warmth with surprising durability considering how lightweight this pant is. Not to mention, Black Diamond coated the shell with DWR to ensure you stay some semblance of dry as you climb up those icy walls. Additionally, the Stance features full-length side zippers that help you take off and put on this pant even while wearing crampons as well as helping with ventilation.

  • An insulated pant for extreme cold-weather climbing
  • Thermolite is lightweight and stays warm when wet
  • Pertex shell with DWR coating protects you from the weather
  • Harness-compatible two-way zippered fly
  • Full-length side zips for quick ventilation
  • With a mission to bring high-quality climbing and ski gear to the public, Black Diamond has been driving the industry since 1957
  • Item #BLD00O8

Wow, major fail from Black Diamond on these pants. These don't fit like previous versions of these pants, and have two serious design flaws that make these a terrible choice for a climbing/hiking pant. First, the web belt is only sewn into the front half of the pants, which means there's a huge lack of ability to really cinch these pants down - as a result, if you've bought them for layering and aren't layering over a voluminous other layer, beware they only cinch down about an inch, so you may well have a whole lot of excess space you can't get rid of. BD should have just put belt loops with a full around belt instead. Secondly, the legs and leg openings are huge, so expect massive drafts if you're wearing them over double boots or insulated hikers, when not wearing gaiters. Really dumb design. I'd imagine even wearing these with ski boots you'd still have drafts. These are like freakin' clown pants.

Wow - these belay pants are amazing. Super toasty. and easily fits over my climbing pants in a snap (yes, they're sized large for this purpose). I used to always fear "sending temps" because belaying was so painful -- not any more! These things pack so easily into my crag bag, and you know they're great when ALL of my climbing partners ask to wear them when it's their turn to belay lol. I am 5'8 and 150 lbs and the Small fit me perfectly. These are also great for photography when the temps dip, or just hanging out at the campsite when it's frigid. The material is nice and smooth, making it super easy to throw over pants. Probably one of the best purchases I made in 2018 - so stoked about these.

Disappointing fit all around

Boy was I disappointed in the fit on these pants, and some of the design details are sorely lacking to boot. First off, these run way large in the waist compared to the size chart, which coupled with the fact that the belt is sewn-in on the front only - meaning it doesn't run through loops all the way around the pants' waist - means it's functionally useless for cinching the waist up more than a tiny amount. The other major drawback is the aspect that the cuffs are HUGE, so if you don't plan to wear these with ski boots - and even then they might be big, even with the elastic cuffs - you'll have major draft issues. I wouldn't recommend these for anyone wearing plastic double-boots, or regular hiking or slimmer boots, you'll be very disappointed by them. It's a shame really because with the Primaloft Silver version I got (now replaced with 100g Thermolite in the 2018 version), these would be good pants down to about 10 degrees or even zero in limited use. I expect the Thermolite version would be even warmer. I like the snaps on the waistband, which is better than Velcro for longer term durability, and the double-snap with zipper fly. Contrary to reviews I've seen in places, this version is full-zip, separating completely on the sides.

I returned these before use. While the insulation of the pant was what I was hoping for, because of the lack of a full size zip (completely comes apart at bottom - you cannot get these pants on over a boot with a crampon or a ski boot.

I own these pants and mine have a full side zip that makes it easy to put one while wearing ski boots or crampons.

I gave these as a gift. He needed better winter pants to walk the dogs when it is really cold, and for activities in the snow. These pants are perfect for just that! He liked that the waist is adjustable. And they are insulated pretty well to keep him warm. The pants fit true to size and where the correct length. These pants will definitely get a lot of use.

Backcountry asked for this review to soon as I have not had the chance to really test them through a range of conditions. However, what I can say at this time is that they seem to be well made. They are comfortable to wear and do seem true to BD's size chart. I am 5'9" 170 and am happy with the mediums. They are lightweight and seem like they would compress well. They have the features you would want in a pant like this, i.e. full side zips that work smoothly, some decent adjustability in the waist, a cargo pocket and I think the knees are articulated. To keep weight down BD has not added any additional abrasion resistance in the seat or knees, time will tell if there is a price to be paid for that. So far it is not an issue, but I have already had a couple of instances where I thought, be careful. Especially when kneeling. There is a cordura patch at the ankles on the inside of each leg. To this point I have really only used them on a couple of hikes and while removing snow, all in the 18 to 20 something degree range. On the hikes I was wearing mid-weight capilene and the stance belay pants. By the mid point of the hike I was venting. Can't say more about cold performance at this time. Although, it is clear that these pants will have their cold limits. I'm just saying don't expect 8000 meter cold performance. I do expect them to perform admirably in the conditions I intend to use them in. Having said what I've said I am stoked about these pants. They are super nice. Definitely recommend. I got them for about $100 on sale. If you don't have a pro deal that's the buy price.

Although I haven't really been able to put these pants to the test, the first couple outings have been great. These things are quite warm and the face fabric is very soft and supple against the skin. Integrated belt allows you to adjust sizing a little bit depending on how many layers you have on underneath. My two favorite features by far are the side zips and the two way fly. Zip to hip allows you to get in and out of the pants without taking your boots off and the two way fly allows you to take care of business when nature calls not matter what you have on - jacket, pack, harness. I foresee these bad boys getting a lot of use in the future. My pant size is a 36x30 and the large fits great.

Perfect belay/ cold weather camping pant. Super warm, nice athletic fit. They won't be sagging off your butt like some gangster pants! The outer material is quite thin so I wouldn't try them in a downhill skiing setting, but for low speed activities with little chance of abrasion they are great. The full length side zips are my favorite feature.

These would be great pants, but they have some very glaring faults that I can't get past and thus can't recommend them. First, they run very short per waist size and small in the hips. I bought these as midweight winter pants for walking my dog and found them too snug with just a midweight long underwear layer on below them, albeit they are warm. Second, though they have some elastic on the cuffs of the legs, the openings are still too large, so if you're not looking to wear them with voluminously-large boots (like ski or giant pac boots), you'll find them very drafty, even with double-mounatineering boots...let alone wearing these with a hiking boot or insulated hiking boots. This is a pretty big oversight on BD's part, because they should snug down tighter and stretch or adjust to accommodate larger boots, rather than be too big to begin with. This is an issue with every insulated pant I've tried in the last few years, with manufacturers seemingly inclined to make them fit for ski and snowboard use, which is weird given these pants are meant for climbers. That said, they have a lot of great features, like the snap behind the full-side zip on each leg, to hold them together as you take them off/put them on over boots, the belt and zipper/two-snaps combo on the waist and fly, and the zip exterior right thigh pocket, along with a trim fit that would be good for climbing, but still enough space inside the pant for layering - outside the too snug hip area that is.

Great for skiing or belaying

These pants are an outstanding layer for super cold resort days. I got Mediums for belaying on cold days in the shade, but the powder has been so good these last few days that I have only skied with them so far and I am super pleased with their warmth. They are functional and easy to move in, so I am sure they will treat me well for belaying as well. The color is true to the photos, but they do run a little big. Great product at the right price.

Had these on Mt Baker and many were super envious of my warmth. They fit well over layers (they are larger than usual to accommodate putting them over layers for warmth) and were plenty warm. Crampon patches help keep punctures from happening and the full zips aid in getting them on and off. They are light and compressible and don't take up a lot of room in the pack for the amount of warmth they will bring. Definitely a great addition. Keep in mind, if you are buying them to use as the sole outer layer or underneath a hard shell, I would probably size down. They are designed to quickly put over layers you may already have on - I put them on over my 3 layer goretex hard shell.

I got these for my husband and here is what he had to say "These pants are great for mountaineering. I am size 29 waist and 30inseam and i got a size Small. The fit is a little big but fit perfectly with some layering. they move with your body well and are very lite weight, great for long days of hiking in the snow. The only thing I wash was different is that they have a lack of pockets.... "
